Happy Friday!  I hope everyone had a great week.

We made it through our first evac drill of the year. Just a reminder you only need to report students that are missing who were present when you took attendance in your classroom and then are not present when you take attendance outside. If you had marked them absent at the beginning of the class you won't need to report them missing again.

Circling back to last week's Friday Focus, I want to discuss common formative assessments more. When we give an assessment, it could be called a quiz or an accountability check, what we do with the data determines if it is formative. If you just give the assessment and move on, then it is not a formative assessment. For it to be a formative assessment, you need to use the data to guide your instruction. This could result in reteaching something the next day if it is a whole class issue or designing an intervention to use when the timing is appropriate. The first time you take the student's "temperature" shouldn't be the summative assessment. You do want to take the time to see what they are learning, along the way, to help guide your instruction. Again, the assessments should be over your essential learnings. You don't have the time or energy to give assessments and interventions over everything.

On Wednesday's in-service, we will be taking a staff picture in the competition gym right away. We are requesting everyone wear red, if you wear a red bulldog shirt, then you can wear jeans also.

Have a great weekend! Cheer on Oklahoma as they take on Kent State on Saturday.

Assistant Principal's Happenings

I have some good news; first, Handbooks are in the office.  Please hand these out Monday to your advisory.  Next, we are also only going to need half of the staff members to sign up for Homecoming Duties.  I will share the document early next week to sign up.  If you sign up this year, you will not need to sign up next year unless something changes.  Our extra event we were looking to have is going to be postponed until the time in between the Fall and Winter Seasons.

We have started to have some parents reach out to the office about students' grades.  I can look them up but I refer them to contacting or emailing the teacher to figure out what's going on in the classroom.  We are only about a week and half away from Mid-term and some students are already in trouble academically.  Please start reaching out now to parents, I think calling goes a lot further than an email so you can explain exactly what's going on with the student.  The more contact you put in now the fewer PASS Plans you will need to have later.

One area I wanted to highlight that has been very helpful so far is the video cameras in the hallways.  I know I have already used them about a dozen times to help determine things quickly and are easy to pinpoint if the student is telling the truth or not.  If you have concerns please let us know.  While the cameras are helpful, they do not have audio, so make sure you are out in the hallways between classes.  A lot of the bully reports I have been receiving are occurring in the halls when teachers are not around.

Enjoy your weekend, and Go Hawks!
