Hopefully this weekend's football results go better for me.  I wanted to take a quick moment to say a huge thank you for your focus and energy during our first Science of Reading session. I know diving headfirst into background theory and foundational research can feel a bit heavy, but getting aligned on the why makes all the difference as we move forward together. The great news? We aren't starting from square one. We are actually stepping into a multi-year, district-wide effort. In fact, our current Freshmen are among the very first students to benefit from this systematic approach at every single grade level before walking through our high school doors! This coming week we will have our first inservice day of the school year.  As we map out our professional development for the year, I want to give you a clear picture of where we’re heading and why. This year, our PD focus will center on the Science of Reading . I know the reaction some of you might have when you hear "reading PD" in a high school building: I teach Chemistry, Auto Tech, or Geometry. I don’t teach reading, so how does this apply to me? That reaction makes complete sense if we’re talking about teaching kids how to decode letters or sound out words. That’s not what this is. In a high school setting, this is about disciplinary literacy —how students read, process, and write within your specific field. A student can’t solve a multi-step word problem in calculus, analyze a source document in history, or execute a safety manual in shop class if they struggle to navigate the specialized language of that subject.   Friday Focus Happy Friday! It is our first 3 day weekend of the school year and officially week 1 of the college football season. I wish your team luck unless they are playing Oklahoma or if it is UT, nobody really likes the shorthorns anyway.   Tuesday would be a good day to refresh your students on the classroom rules and procedures. The honeymoon phase this year is not near as long as it has been in the past, usually we can make it to homecoming.  On September 16, during 3rd and 4th period, I will be administering the Civics Exams to 70+ seniors that have not taken this exam yet. This is a new state requirement for graduation. Students must earn a 60% or higher sometime during their 4 years in high school. Students will be taking this exam normally in government class their Junior year. Students can take it as many times as needed.   Friday Focus Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great first full week of school. I know I am a little more tired than I have been in a while.  I want to thank everyone for hitting our policies hard with the students. If we continue to do this, the rest of the year will be much easier. I am taking cell phones and earbuds from students when I see them with them in the hallway during class time. My guess is the students didn't believe we would do this.  I think the start of the year has gone very smoothly, this in large part due to all of you. Again, thank you for all you do for our students. With the start of September, we do have 2 building in-service days this month. CIA will send agendas out to the staff the week we have those inservices.  As some of you started to hear this week, Nohava has moved onto the high school to replace our roof and skylights.    Friday Focus: The Final Countdown Happy Friday, everyone! As this is our final Friday Focus of the year, I’ve packed this update with everything you need to navigate our final week smoothly. Thank you for all your hard work getting us to the finish line! Celebrate Tracy Meylor! Please join us in the library this Monday at 3:45 PM for a retirement reception honoring Tracy Meylor. This gathering will take the place of the usual district reception. Let’s gather to celebrate Tracy’s career and wish her the very best in her next chapter!
