Friday Focus

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week.

First, I want to give a huge congratulations to Molly Boeve for being named our Employee of the Month! She was nominated by Ms. Hommes for her incredible dedication to our students and school community. Mrs. Boeve was pleasantly surprised by her family and co-workers during 1st period on Wednesday—such a well-deserved recognition!

Speaking of great work happening around our building, thank you all for such an engaging professional development session last week! We kicked off our time together exploring the Science of Reading with a "Brain ~ Book ~ Buddy" retrieval exercise, zeroing in on why direct, explicit vocabulary instruction across all content areas is so vital for our students. Because vocabulary is one of the strongest predictors of reading development and advanced writing, helping our students master high-utility (Tier 2) and subject-specific (Tier 3) terms directly impacts their overall academic success. We dove into creating student-friendly definitions, structuring frequent and robust practice (around 10 words a week), and exploring the key word features—like orthography, morphology, and context—that make definitions truly stick.

Now it’s time to take those ideas and put them into action! Whether you're assessing prior knowledge with a quick self-assessment Vocabulary Rubric, using visual two-column organizers, engaging students with "Mystery Word of the Day," or having them organize terms through Concept Sorts and ABC Graffiti, these practical tools make vocabulary explicit, interactive, and fun. As you map out your upcoming lessons, try choosing at least one or two Tier 2 or Tier 3 words from your curriculum and pairing them with a strategy from our session. Let's give our students the rich vocabulary boost they need to thrive across every subject!

I’ve also received a number of questions lately regarding our end-of-semester testing schedule, so I want to make sure everyone has those dates locked in early. Semester tests will take place on Friday, December 18th (odd periods) and Monday, December 21st (even periods). Our designated make-up testing day will be Tuesday, December 22nd, which will also be a 2-hour early dismissal to kick off winter break. Let me know if you have any questions as we wrap up this first quarter!

Reminders/Due Dates

Assistant Principal's Happenings

The end of the quarter means grading for teachers.  For the AP, it means restricting "opens".  We tie the privilege of "opens" to several things at quarter time:
* Overall number of tardies
*Meeting grade requirements for in-person classes
*Meeting grade requirements for online classes.

We are running reports on all of these things and talking with individual students as appropriate.  Thank you to our guidance counselors, study hall teachers, and the Success Center for your flexibility and help.

Grateful for you and our team --

Moss

  Friday Focus Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. Please don't forget to grab lunch in the lounge today. This is just a small token of appreciation for all that you do.  Now is a dad brag: If you see Tessa, Sadie Meyer, Kinnick Leusink, and Claire Susemihl congratulate them for breaking the school and conference record in the shuttle hurdle relay.  It is hard to believe it is May 8 already and we only have 7 days of regular classes left. Mrs. Leavitt will be sending information out regarding summer professional development. We will post our QR codes by the mailboxes. You will have 15 hours again to learn about something that interests you and is applicable to your position.  Today is the last day for our Seniors. If they are not taking your semester test, please sign their checkout sheets today. Seniors will need to turn in their Chromebook to the library. Cody and/or Tracy will be in there to collect the computers. Seniors will take their semester tests...
