Happy Friday!  I hope everyone had a great week. Enjoy the three day weekend.

I had a couple questions asked this week, that I think would be good to cover with everyone. The first had to do with the Tier 2 plans. Reminder that all teachers must do a Tier 2 plan regardless if you are being evaluated this year. Your department can use the same Tier 2 plan, but each person needs to submit one. Tier 2 plans are due on 9/16.

The second question I was asked had to do with grading and assessments. We have been working on common formative assessments the last couple of school years. It is expected that all common classes give the same common formative assessment.

  1. Does this mean we have to teach the same way and have the same daily work? No, you don't have to teach the same way and have the same daily work. I would actually prefer that you don't teach the same way. This will lead to better discussion of student assessment data.
  2. Does this mean we need to use the same readings? No, you don't have to use the same articles/novels/passages, but they do need to cover the same essential learnings and that is what should be covered in an assessment.
  3. Do I need to create intervention for everything I teach? No, you should only be creating interventions for those identified essential learnings. The essential learnings were created through a process where each department (grades 6-12) rated all the standards and used these ratings to determine their essential learnings.
  4. Can I change my essential learnings? This is a two part answer. As an individual no you can not. Again these were created by each department and many of the essential standards extend into several grade bands. If your department wants to reexamine the essential learnings that is fine, but the same process will need to be used that was initially to determine the essential learnings.
If you have questions about this, please talk with Kyle or myself.

Looking ahead, evac drill on 9/7 at 9:25 am. Please make sure you take roll when you get to your evac site and let the lead teacher know who you are missing and who you have extra. If we would have a real fire, we need to make sure all students are accounted for.

Have a great weekend! Cheer on Oklahoma as they take on UTEP on Saturday.

A few reminders for the week:

I will send out information to the staff members on my Evaluation List.  Please start checking for times to complete the three evaluations.  I would prefer to have two evaluations completed before the end of the first semester and complete the third in the second semester.  I will share my calendar with the people on my list so you can see when I have time to complete these.

The Handbooks have shipped!  They will probably not be here before advisory next week so the following week would be a good time to hand them out to students.  Please remind them to look over the handbook and ask questions if they don't understand something.  Reminder- these were completed in early May so not all updates were done and a few mistakes, like not fixing Mrs. Heying and Kruse's name, were found afterward but will be fixed in the future.

We had about three groups of students walking around at the end of the day from several classrooms on Thursday.  They were being loud in the halls and bothering other classes.  There is no reason to let them leave early unless there is a note or call from the office.

A reminder that if a student doesn't stand for the Pledge we cannot force them to do so.  Please just let them sit and continue the lesson after the Pledge.

Homecoming is approaching at the end of the month.  Our theme is "Dogs through the Decades."  We are not planning to have students have floats due to a lack of participation the past few years and new rules from the City about parades.  Instead, we want as many groups as possible from the school to create floats for the parade to get students involved.  I will be sending out a sign-up sheet for teacher duties during Homecoming hopefully by the end of next week.  You are expected to sign up for one duty, we will need 8 more people working the parade route this year and you get to wear a nice Bright Yellow Vest as part of the safety crew.  We are also looking at adding another event on Monday that week but are still working out some of the details and will need volunteers for that.  If you are willing to Chaperone the Dance, I would be willing to take a week of your teacher duty before or after school.  Please email me if you are interested, you wouldn't have other Homecoming duties.  We are planning to have 6-8 parent chaperones depending on how many school staff we can get to chaperone the dance.

Enjoy the three-day Labor Day Weekend and Let's go Hawks!  Sorry to all the SDSU fans out there...
