Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week. It is hard to believe we are at the end of September! Today will be crazy, please keep the students in class and do not let them walk around or go to the gym to help decorate. Student Council has enough help to get this done. Please also remind students that if they are going to eat lunch at school, they need to report to the commons right away. We will stop serving at 12:15. Those that normally help on lunch duty do not need to report. I can cover this. Coronation starts at 1:00 with the parade following. The last I heard, there are only 65 entries in the parade, so I figure the parade will last roughly 45 minutes.
Our first night of conferences are next week. The time has changed from previous years based on feedback received on the calendar. Conferences will run 4:30 to 8:00 pm. Amy and Deb have a shared spreadsheet with all appointments that have been made. If you are scheduling pass plans, please make sure you are marking those on this sheet or you could get double booked.
Thank you for your work on Wednesday. I appreciate the conversations that I heard and how open and honest everyone is with each other. We are all trying to help other become better at what we do and make the student learning the best it can be. During our next early out, we will start out in the library at 2:00. CIA will send out more information on what that day will look like soon.
Some dates to keep in mind: Oct. 3 - Shelter Drill - 2:35 pm, Oct. 5 & 9 - Parent Teacher Conferences - note time is 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm, Oct. 19 - End of 1st Quarter, and Oct. 23 Qtr 1 grades due by 8:00 am.
Have a great weekend!MarkAssistant Principal's Happenings
Thank you for all your efforts to make this a good HoCo week. It can be frustrating to deal with extra student energy and to try and teach and keep everyone focused. My years out of school taught me that HoCo is a special time in our community and actually gives us some really good PR. We are front and center this week in the eyes of the town. Let's finish well with a good HoCo Friday!
Thank you for signing up for HoCo duties. Please review what you signed up for.
Parade Route helpers and Parade Line Up helpers -- you should have gotten an email from me on Monday with directions. Look in your box for some materials this morning. Parade Route folks -- you should have a safety vest that must be returned to me on Monday. Line Up people -- you will have an updated line up map along with parade rule reminders that must be handed out to every float in the line up. I'll be running around with the school Kubota. Molly Boeve and I will eventually be on Central Ave to get the parade started once Royalty and the Big Red Band is ready to go.
Coronation Helpers -- Please report to the multi-purpose room west of the Competition Gym to assist with flowers and pictures at 12:30.
Coronation Clean Up --- You can start immediately after coronation or wait until kids come back to help after the parade. I will leave that up to your collective decision.
Dance Supervision people -- please be at Carey Gym by 8:45.
Looking ahead:
My apologies, but I will be out of the office again Monday and Tuesday next week. This time I will be trained in Boys Town management strategies. Depending on how it goes, you may be hearing more about this in the future. When you email me for help and I'm out of the building, I try to respond as soon as I can to let you know that I'm not nearby to assist you. Sometimes people apologize for bothering me. Don't. It's never a bother. I just want to let you know that I am unable to respond to your requests.
Behavior/Attendance:
Just FYI, the pattern has been to have around 20-30 students to catch up with regarding attendance issues per day. Some issues are simple roll call mistakes. Please check your attendance before the end of the day to make sure you have changed the attendance for students who have been tardy but was marked truant. I've been averaging around 5-10 detentions per day. I do my best to communicate with you when discipline issues originate in your class. I don't give you an update every time I catch a student skipping, but if you need more information feel free to ask.
Just for Fun:
Some of you will remember Mr. Mark Zeka, who was a math and social studies teacher on staff at LCHS. Earlier this week he sent me this gem of a picture from HoCo 2016. All but two people are still on staff at LCS in some capacity. I think if Mr. Eckstaine clicks his shoes together he may be transported back to West River South Dakota territory!
