Happy Friday!  We have now made it through the first full week of the school year. I hope everyone has had a great week.

Just a couple of reminders, 1. We have our ALICE training for students today. Freshmen will be 2nd period, Sophomores 3rd, Juniors 4th, and Seniors 6th. The students will report directly to the little theater. 2. Tier 2 plans are due today, please upload the plan the folder in the shared drive.

We finally have our reading and writing scores from the ISASP from last year. I have printed out the student ISASP report sheets that we will hand out for the October 2 advisory activity. I am going to be posting a lot of data here and then will talk briefly about it. There is a lot for us to be celebrating and to be proud of. In the 21-22 school year we were 0-3 on reaching our goals. Last year we hit 2 of the 3, with math being the only goal we missed.

This is the board goal:

By the year 2026, 80% of students in grades 3 - 5, 6 - 8, and 9 - 11 will be at or above proficiency on the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) in the areas of Reading, Math, and Science.

Building goals for 2022-2023:

In the spring of 2023, 77% of students in grades 9-11 will be at or above proficiency on the Reading portion of the ISASP.

In the spring of 2023, 76.8% of students in grades 9-11 will be at or above proficiency on the Math portion of the ISASP.

In the spring of 2023, 75.3% of students in grade 10 will be at or above proficiency on the Science portion of the ISASP.

IEP- Individual Education Plan (Special Education)
ELL- English Language Learner

As you can see from the totals, 82% of our students were proficient in reading. This is outstanding! Our math and writing scores are good, but we still have some work to do to get to that 80% proficiency goal by 2026. Science we are on pace to reach the 80% proficiency goal by 2026.

All of us can help our students work on their writing skills. As you can see only 73% of our students were proficient in writing. By increasing this area, we will also increase the ELA. As writing and reading make up the ELA score. If you check out this link, https://iowa.pearsonaccess.com/rubrics/, it gives the rubrics of how the writing tests are scored. This can assist us in getting our students ready for the writing portion of the ISASP.

Tuesday next week, I'll be at a workshop at the AEA in the afternoon. It goes from 12:30 - 3:00 pm.

Enjoy your three day weekend!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

IEP and 504 updates:  You may have noticed an icon appearing next to some of your students in PowerSchool.  I've gone through our 504 and IEP rosters and "tagged" kids in PS so that it shows up next to their picture. Look for the notification icon that looks like an exclamation point (!).  We don't have accommodations listed in this field yet, but this hopefully helps to identify and remind us of students with IEPs and 504s.   Their accommodations may be buried in your email somewhere -- you may need to search Gmail with the student's name.

Homecoming Duties:  Please sign up for a HoCo duty at this link.  If all the spots are filled, please add a line and add your name.  If you have extenuating circumstances, please talk to myself or Dr. Iverson.

Attendance:  We have less lost freshman wandering the hallways, which is good!  This is a friendly reminder to take accurate roll each day.  If a student is tardy, please change it from a "16" to a "14".  I think we have some students surprised that we check up on each absence.  Having accurate information makes this easier -- I hate giving consequences to a kid who was actually in class and was marked truant by mistake.  Thanks for your help in this.

Just for Fun:  Somehow this week I started joking about the "hallowed halls of LCHS" and that we needed an alma-mater to sing.  Well, Gabe Davis came through for us.  Here is the song you didn't know you needed, ala chatGPT. There are 5(!) verses, but I will only benevolently bestow verse 1 today. Thomas Vigdal has graciously offered to write the score:) (Notice that chatGPT doesn't get everything exactly right.....)

(Verse 1)
In Le Mars, Iowa, our school stands tall,
Where Bulldogs roam with a mighty call.
A spirit united, strong and true,
We wear our colors, white and blue.

(Chorus)
Oh, Le Mars Bulldogs, we're fierce and bold,
Through every challenge, we're a stronghold.
In classrooms and fields, we proudly strive,
For victory and knowledge, side by side.

Keep being awesome!
