Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week.

Good job on the evac drill on Tuesday. Chief Schipper was happy with how this one went. Thanks for getting the students up on the sidewalks and out of the street. I did have students go to different evacuation sites to see if they were reported extra or missing. Please ask if there are any students there that are not in a class that evacuates to that area. I had 2 accounted for, reported extra and missing and only 2 reported missing but not extra.

At cabinet on Tuesday, we reviewed our process for sending out messages for lockouts, lockdowns, evacuate, etc. We use the same system that is used for weather delays along with the intercom. If you leave the building, for class or during lunch for personal business, please have your cell phone with you as that will be the quickest way that you will be notified if something is happening in school.

Later next week, I will be handing out the goal sheets last year from ISASP, a new black goal sheet, and the student scores from last year's ISASP. MTSS has a required activity in October where students will need to look at their scores and create goals for this school year. There are a few goal sheets I am missing from last year, my guess is they were not turned into the office.

Homecoming is next week, please be extra vigilant in being in the halls. We still have expectations that learning will continue through the week. You may also participate in the dress up days that week. Friday all students will be dismissed after 4th period. We will still be serving lunch so please tell the students if they want to eat here, they need to go right to the lunch room. Otherwise, all students are free to leave. The pep rally starts at 1:00 followed by the parade. You are technically still on contract at that time, so please attend the festivities if you are not helping with parade lineup or parade supervision. This is a different expectation than the past, reason being we no longer have the float building work time at night to make up the time from Friday afternoon.

Midterms will be handed out during advisory on Monday. Some other dates to keep in mind: September 27 - In-Service, September 29 - Homecoming, October 5 & 9 - Parent Teacher Conferences.

Have a great weekend!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

I was fortunate to attend an Ed Leadership Camp held by UNI at NWAEA last Thursday and Friday.  It was focused on Special Education. I learned a lot and look forward to continue to grow in that area.

A few things on my mind this week:

1) Contacting me for assistance -- It turns out my office has extremely poor cell service.  Routinely I receive texts 20 minutes after-the-fact and many outbound texts are also delayed.  My reception is a little better throughout the building and it seems that calls come through better than texts.  Going forward if you need assistance follow this sequence, depending on immediacy of need:
A) the office intercom or calling the office phone for emergency service
B) calling my cell phone for pressing issues
C) school email for things that could wait a little bit
D) text message if you are feeling lucky

2) Tardies are starting to pile up for some students.  If you have a student that slipped through with more than 5 tardies, we must start consequences with the first level (detention with teacher) upon the next tardy that occurs.  Consult the handbook for a refresher if needed.

3)  Sub plans. I've had several subs express thankfulness for solid sub plans left behind.  Thank you.  Remember to leave enough work to last the whole period without relying on computer games or "phone time".  Not enough work for students usually means trouble for a substitute.  We are incredibly blessed to have a deep and veteran pool of subs willing to come to LCHS compared to other districts.  We want to make their day as smooth as possible so they continue to return.

4) PASS plans.  We all have students that we are already concerned about.  Please don't hesitate to set up a PASS plan or simply contact parents.  It is difficult to overcome a poor start with grades and some of our freshmen need a little help figuring out HS standards. I'm grateful for the extra work you put in to help all our kids become successful.

5) Homecoming.  Here is a link to the HoCo duty sheet.  Thanks in advance for all you will do to make next week a great week.  Parade helpers -- I think the police department will require parade helpers to wear a safety vest.  I have a safety meeting Monday afternoon and will learn more then.  Stay tuned.  If your LCHS team, club, or group wants to have a float in the parade, the deadline to turn in the form is today at noon.

6)  Things I'm thinking about.  One thing you may not know -- historically I have struggled to maintain a positive professional outlook.  I really struggled with this toward the end of my teaching tenure so I'm always looking for ways to refocus with gratitude.  Several of you have encouraged me by sharing your small daily wins.  I'm starting to catalog a daily win each day before I leave the office. No matter how rough my day may have been, I resolve to end the day on a positive note. Check with me sometime to keep me accountable and to share your daily wins with me that we might be mutually encouraged.

With Gratitude -- Adam
