Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. Next week on Monday we will have a Sophomore and Senior class meeting. The Sophomores will go first in the little theater followed by the Seniors. Also on Monday we have our first night of parent-teacher conferences. I hope you have taken the time to personally invite the parents of students who are struggling. When I ran the midterm "F" list we had 116 students with one or more "F" grades. You should also be starting to look at PASS Plans for those who are showing a pattern. I do not want you to wait until 2nd quarter to get these going. We need to give the parent some time to try to do something or time for a plan to work.
Just a reminder to get new courses for next year into me soon. I will look them over and talk with you if I have any questions. Courses that get approved will be added to the course description booklet and to registration materials.
I also want to take a moment to address the "Staph" issue that swirled around the building. Mrs. Buhman did an excellent job in handling all the rumors and questions about our building. We did have a couple of students that had MRSA, but this is no different than what we have had in past years. The big issue this time is that the rumor that the weight room was the source. Ray does clean the weight room every night and does wipe down the benches, bars, etc. We also had the strength class do a preventative cleaning. Starting this week, we will have hand towels and spray bottles in there for people to use when they get done lifting to clean the items they used. People using the weight room are asked to grab a towel when they enter and then put it in the basket to be washed.
Since Tuesday, I have received numerous questions about the stadium project. In 2015-2016, the Board approved to set aside $100,000 a year to assist in funding the renovation. The Board was then approached by the LCHS Foundation to offer assistance by performing a capital campaign. After the presentation, the Board directed Dr. Wendt to establish a design committee to work with an architect to get some drawings and an estimate of the project. The plans you have seen were the work of this committee. Fast forward to now, the Foundation has secured a $2 million donation towards the stadium project. The money was donated specifically for this project by creating a "showcase stadium" for the community. The Board has encouraged the Foundation to continue a capital campaign to assist in funding the project. The district's share of the funding will come from SAVE funds (state $0.01 sales tax, formally called SILO), which by law, can only be used for infrastructure. The district will not raise property tax to build the stadium. A tentative estimation is that it may take a year to complete the project. When the architect gets involved again, he/she could give us a better idea on the timeline. So if would break ground after track season, we think it will take a full year to finish.
Have a great weekend!

Please continue to keep Mr. Martin, Mr. Jentz, and Mrs. Nelson in your thoughts as they continue to deal with medical issues. It is great to hear Mr. Martin is at home and is able to get out and walk. Hopefully he will be able to join us soon.
Shawn Starr had hip surgery on Tuesday. He will be out for a couple of weeks. Please keep him in your thoughts also.

IEP Update for all teachers to be aware of: The word received from Thomas Mayes (Iowa Dept. of Ed Attorney), via Dave Curry with the AEA, is that for an IEP to be in compliance the general education teacher may not leave before the IEP has concluded. Parent's should have access to every member of the IEP team for the entire IEP meeting, that way if there are issues or questions that come up then the parent would have the opportunity to ask those questions and get input at any time during the meeting. In short, if you are asked to be a part of an IEP, you will be expected to stay for the entire meeting.
Keep in mind that on the rare occasion, the teacher may need to leave before the end of the meeting, then we would need a signed consent from the parent excusing the teacher early.
The LCHS Student Council will be kicking off their annual fundraiser with the Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign. This fall more than 130 local soldiers will be traveling overseas to fight for our freedom. The student council will run their campaign starting at the October 13th football game. It will be "Camo" night and we will begin collecting monetary donations as well as food donatations for our packages that we send overseas to our soldiers. We will collect items from October 13th - November 3rd. Updates on the items we are looking to collect this year will come within the next week or two.
Special Education department will have a meeting next Friday, October 6th, at 7:30 am in the main office conference room.

Google Suite offer numerous opportunities to help kids learn. Eric Curtis has used many ways and has created a blog to share what he has done and how it works. The name of the blog is Control Alt Achieve. Over 23 GSuites ideas are presented, but here are some specifically aimed to help with literacy. Many of our students are accomplished readers, but as you are finding out, we also have many students that struggle. Look these ideas over and see if any can be used in your classroom!Success Center Update
