September 15, 2017

Happy Friday! Today is the marathon day. We will be dismissing classes at 11:42. Coronation will start in the competition gym at 1:00 pm with the parade following. Then at 7:00 pm the Bulldog football team will take on SBL. Following the game will be the annual homecoming dance. If you are looking for something to do after the game come and join us.

We do have our district in-service on Wednesday next week. All groups will meet in the library. Mrs. Permswaran and Mrs. Collins are going to go over the unit planning form that we will use at the secondary level. After their presentation, we will split out into our groups and CIA members will have examples for you to look at. This year shows us why we need to have these documents. With Mr. Jentz and Mr. Martin missing days due to health, the unit plan guides would have been helpful for the substitutes to plan the lessons. Sorry, Joel and Doug, but you became my poster boys for this. I do know each group is at a different point and may not be ready to do the unit planning. The CIA and administrators thought it was important that we all hear the same instructions at one time.

Please mark your calendar for parent/teacher conferences on Oct 2 and Oct. 5. They will run 5:00 to 8:30 pm.

Have a great weekend!
Mark

Assistant Principal's Happenings

Happy Homecoming!  Thank you to everyone for all that you have done to help make this week a success!  Reminder that we still need help at the homecoming dance.  It is from 9-12 in Carey Gym and we would love to see you there - the student's really appreciate the support.

The LCHS Student Council will be kicking off their annual fundraiser with the Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign.  This fall more than 130 local soldiers will be traveling overseas to fight for our freedom.  The students council will run their campaign starting at the October 13th football game.  It will be "camo" night and we will begin collecting monetary donations as well as food donations for our packages that we send overseas to our soldiers.  We will collect items from October 13th - November 3rd.  Updates on the items we are looking to collect this year will come within the next week or two.

Instructional Coaches Corner

Checking for Understanding of Directions
When teachers don't check for understanding of directions, they end up with two kids of students- lifters and leaners. Lifters are the students who always hear, understand, and retain the instructions. Lifters do the work. Leaners, however, depend on lifters to hear and understand the directions. If we don't check for understanding, we tend to have to repeat our directions. Even if the teacher doesn't have to repeat directions, your lifters end up doing this work for the leaners. Hold every child accountable for listening to directions by using the following checking for understanding strategy.
1. say the directions once
2. ask students to pair-share the directions (put them on the clock)
3. bring the kids back
4. call on kids in the following order to repeat directions: interviewed pairs, randomly selected students, then volunteers.
5. Tell students how much time they have to complete the task

Tracy's Technology Tidbits
I would like to take a moment and thank all of you who have been so understanding during the past 3 weeks as I haven't been able to get to your requests in as timely a manner as I would prefer. I am hoping after this weekend that my speed of reply will increase significantly.

As some of you have sought out ways to contact Doug to let him know we are thinking about him I thought this might be a good opportunity to introduce you to Flipgrid again. It allows you to collect video snippets and put them all on one page. Each snippet is accessed by clicking on it's preview picture. Click here to see what Jordan Menning, a science consultant with the AEA, and his colleagues prepared. If there is any interest I believe I could create one for our staff and even his students.

One last technology idea I would like to share is this Parent Survey form. I find it worth checking out for several reasons. One is that it is a way to collect information at the beginning of a school year about your students through the eyes of their parents ("You're about 3 weeks late on that one Wingert.") I also liked the way the teacher embedded a video to share information about her class with the parents. Lastly, I thought this was a good way to give her students' parents an opportunity to sign up for Remind so that they could see what is happening in her classroom.

As always, if you have a technology activity you would like assistance with or maybe you have some vague idea of something you want to try and you need to talk it out with someone or maybe you have a PD class you would like to see offered, please contact me so that I can support you.
