September 1, 2017

Happy Friday! We made it through the first full week of school and Mr. Bork didn't get hurt at the assembly, great week! Enjoy your three day weekend. Thanks for getting this school year off to a great start. I know with the health issues of some of our friends, it has been a difficult start. Thanks to everyone who has gone above and beyond to help out. We have hired a long-term sub until Mr. Martin can return. Art Witten will be starting on Tuesday. He is a retired science teacher and lives around Galva.

On Tuesday we will have class meetings during advisory. See Mr. Utesch's post below to see where each group is meeting. I will be with the Seniors as we will try to do their class picture and go over some other beginning of the year business for them. Homecoming will be coming fast, so the classes will need to organize quickly to get things done.

We do have our first extra-hour meeting on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 am in the library. Jill Brown will be doing an APL refresher. Neal and I will start getting into the classrooms this coming week to start walk-throughs. If you have a new strategy you are trying or want an extra set of eyes in the room, please don't hesitate to ask us to come in.

Now that we are getting back into the swing of things, you will start to have your PLC meetings. Please meet during your prep period in the weeks we do not have an extra hour or district PD meeting. Once you meet, please upload the meeting form to the PD website under your area. If you would like me to come to your meeting, I would be happy to. Just drop me a note and I'll be there if possible. Don't forget to review or rewrite your group norms and create your short term SMART goal. These goals should be on the minutes and then your the center of your conversations during the PLC meetings. You will want to bring in classroom data to share. This could be a formative assessment or some other data that supports your goal. Use your peers to see if they know other strategies that may help those who did not meet your goal.

We also have our first fire drill of the year on Tuesday at 10:10 am. Please refresh yourself and your students on the procedure. I will let those who exit out the back door know who the leader will be to report students absent and who are extra.

Be Extraordinary!
Mark

Assistant Principal's Happenings

This year the LCS Homecoming theme is "Back to the Future."  We are excited about this theme and are going to try and tie alumni into our parade and festivities as much as possible.  Right now we are looking for past Homecoming Kings and Queens from different decades that may be available and willing to participate in our homecoming coronation and parade.  If you know any potential participants from years past that may be interested, please let myself or Mrs. Isebrand know and any contact information for them that you may have.

Parade Entry forms are located on our school website: www.lemars.k12.ia.us  for anyone who is interested in being in the parade.

As in years past, the LCHS student council will be looking for 2-3 staff volunteers to help out with our homecoming dance on Friday, September 15th. The dance is from 9-12 pm in Carey Gym.

Staff sign up sheet to help with the homecoming festivities is posted in the staff lounge.  Please sign up by September 5th to help out.

We will have our class meetings on Tuesday, September 5th during advisory so that you can begin to plan for your class floats.  Building will take place at the fair grounds again this year and sign ups will be soon for staff to volunteer to help.

Class officers are as follows:
Juniors: Landen Parmelee, Joey De Boer, and Dacia Buss
Sophomores: Maddi Pippett, Anthony Lamoreux, and Chloe Calhoun
Freshman: Kutter Wright, Abby Hoss, and Donny Daggett

Class Sponor chairpersons will want to meet with these students ahead of time to develop a plan for your meetings (come see Mr. Utesch to get details for planning).

Meetings will be in the following areas: (Tuesday - September 4th)

Seniors: New Competition Gym (Meeting with Counselors)
Juniors: Carey Gym
Sophomores: Little Theater
Freshman: Commons

Seniors will meet during this time to talk with counselors (Mrs. Hill & Mr. Kopperud) about credit checks and preparation for graduation.

Librarian's News

As I stated last week, I will be traveling to the elementary buildings this year. Typically, it will be on a Tuesday. Thursdays and odd Fridays, I teach in the middle school, though I am back and forth on those days. Mrs. Dalton will be here to manage the library. However, if you are sending a student to do something, and you want to verify that he or she was in the library, please have a pass or something in the assignment book from you and for Mrs. Dalton or myself to sign. Even though we may be at our computers, we do not have our email open all of the time, and often do not see an email from you to verify the student is present until the period is over.

More Student Council news: students will be voting for Homecoming king and queen on Monday, September 11. Please encourage them to vote during advisory. Voting will be done on a Google form that will be emailed to them that morning. However, many students do not use their school email. Please encourage them to check their email prior to Monday and make sure they can get logged in. If not, please send them to the library so we can reset passwords. In addition, we have had many new students in the past few months that may have not been added into a class group for emails. If you have students who did not receive the email, please have them email me that they needed to be added. In the meantime, please have another student forward the email to the newer student so he or she can still vote then.

Success Center Update

I would like to request that you include me as a "student" or share access with me in your google classrooms and schoology classes, please.  If you teach more than one section (and all sections will be doing the same thing,) it is okay to only add me to one.  It helps us to better follow your expectations and eliminate excuses when we can see assignments and supplemental materials as they have been presented.  Thank you!
