Friday Focus

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week.

On Monday, I attended a DCAP workshop. You may be asking what is a DCAP workshop? DCAP is our District Career Academic Plan. Just like the student ICAP, Individual Career Academic Plan, the district must have one also. In the DCAP, we spell out what we are doing to prepare our students for college career readiness and employability skills. The DCAP consists of 7 sections, the main sections deal with course planning, work-based learning, and 5 essential components of ICAP.

The course planning section deals with the students 4 year plan and how the students and parents are advised on progress towards graduation. This is why we have the grade level registration meetings, our 8th grade CTE day, 8th grade parent meeting, etc so we can meet this requirement.

I am sure by this point, you are asking yourself how does this apply to me? This gets us into the next few sections with what we do in class matters to not only get the students ready academically, but to make them aware of opportunties out there. In terms of careers, many students only know about careers that family members have, he/she may not be aware of what else is offered at a community college, 4 year school, or even on the job training. It is all of our responsibiltiy to help students become more aware of these opportunities.

The state has redefined work-based learning as, "sustained project-based learning in partnership with an employer, simulated work experiences aligned with industry-recognized credentials (IRC), high-quality pre-apprenticeships aligned to an apprenticeship, student learner programs, internships and apprenticeships.” We have been working hard to add more and more opportunities for our students.

One way we can add more opportunities is through "sustained project-based learning in partnership with an employer or simulated work experiences aligned with industry-recognized credentials (IRC)" Sustained project-based learning is something that will last most of the semester and not just a small part of the semester. We do have a few classes that lead to IRC's. Those are CNA, EMT, both years of our college welding, and the cpr/aed training in our health class.

Not only is the state pushing more work based learning, but they also are pushing career connected learning through career exploration. This area will be easier for you to incorporate into the classroom. All of your academic areas lead to careers, this is something you can discuss with your classes. Taking classes on job/worksite tours, classroom speakers, campus visits, career/employment/college fairs, recruiters visit the classroom to discuss postsecondary education and training options. Other activities that help in this area: creating a resume/cover letter, and research potential careers or colleges.

Earlier this year, I had you fill out a survey on what activities you incorporate in your classes. I used this feedback to fill out our DCAP. This will be a yearly survey that is sent out so your particiaption is greatly appreciated.

Assistant Principal's Happenings

Earlier this week, a colleague and I had a good discussion about behaviors in a class period and we were brainstorming some ideas.  The "Behavior Chart" came into that discussion at some point, and we both realized that we hadn't look at this in a while.  Here is a link if you would like a refresher.  Let me know if you would like to brainstorm ideas together.

Here is a link to current cell phone restrictions.

Grateful for our team,

Moss
