Friday Focus

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week. The way the students were behaving, I would have thought we were getting 2 feet of snow. 

Judd and Melissa are getting closer to having 95% of our students registered. I will be starting to send meeting invites out to departments to discuss registration numbers for 26-27. Also, please remember to start on your 26-27 requisitions. Please refer back to Mrs. Holzman's email regarding the format of the requisitions. If it does not meet what she needs, I'll need to reject it so you can redo it. 

I am happy to announce we have filled our new PE, Head Strength position. Bryant Dutcher will be joining us to take on this position. He is a graduate of Buena Vista and is currently teaching at Sioux City East. Next school year, we are starting a new class called Bulldog Strength and Speed. We are strongly encouraging all of our athletes to take this course to get their strength training done during the school day. 

Please don't forget to give Dr. Webner you feedback on the school calendar for next school year. Today is the last day to do that.

Boys Town Refresher:

The third quarter can feel really long.  Students get sick of school; staff gets sick of student apathy and behaviors.  It is a good time for us to take a step back and make sure we are centered ourselves.  Here is a reminder about "rational detachment":

"Maintaining Rational Detachment"

In the context of the Boys Town Well-Managed Schools and general behavioral management, rational detachment is the ability to stay in control of your own behavior and not take a student's disruptive or aggressive actions personally.

It involves maintaining a professional "distance" from the emotional intensity of a situation, allowing you to respond with calm, objective logic rather than an emotional reaction. By practicing rational detachment, you ensure that your response is focused on teaching the student and maintaining safety, rather than winning an argument or reacting to an insult.

Don't Take it Personally: Recognize that student outbursts are often reflections of their own struggles—such as trauma, poverty, or mental health issues—rather than a personal attack on you.

Focus on the Behavior, Not the Blame: Success in classroom management depends on correcting the specific inappropriate behavior instead of placing blame on the student's character.

Stay Objective: Remind yourself that your role is to provide emotional and behavioral support to help the student succeed, which is as critical as academic instruction.

Rational detachment is not giving the student a free pass for behaviors.  It is making sure that we (as staff) stay professional in our dealings with students, even when we are at our wits' end.  Let me know how I can support you.

  Friday Focus Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. We made it through graduation breakfast, practice, and award night. I was thinking that Wednesday is just as about as busy of a day as the Friday of homecoming for me.  This will be the last Friday Focus for the school year, so I'll try to remember to have everything you need to know to get through the last week of classes. Please remember contracts are due to Central Office on the 23rd. I do have a basket on my desk where you can turn it into me and I'll get it to Central Office.   We will be running the advisory schedule on Monday. On Tuesday, we will use the last day of school schedule. On the last day of classes students will be checking out. Please sign their check out sheets. If they have school property that needs to be returned, please document it on the sheet. During advisory that day, they will turn in their laptops.   Friday Focus Happy Friday!   I hope everyone has had a great week. Today is midterm of the 1st quarter. Please make sure all grades are up to date. Amy will run midterms and we will hand them out during 8th period.   I have had my first PASS plan turned in, congrats to Ms. Hommes to be the first one to get one done. Unfortuately is is for a senior that needs his credits. Next week is homecoming, let the fun begin. Monday night at 7:30 pm is the coronation. Come out to the competition gym to see who will be crowned this year's King and Queen.  On Monday, we will have class meetings so students can sign up for the different competitions. Freshmen will be in the Little Theater, Sophomores in the Library, Juniors in the Commons, and Seniors in the Competition Gym. Teachers with the asterick by their name in the Teacher Handbook are the lead teachers and will need to take charge of these meetings.  Dress up days for Homecoming Week. YOU CAN PARTICIPATE!...

Friday Focus Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week , and Adam and I will be providing lunch on Friday. I truly appreciate your dedication and willingness to work with students—even when challenging. Your professionalism and commitment to doing what's best for students never wavers. Senior Information It's hard to believe that next week will be the seniors' last week of regular classes. On Friday, seniors will be checking out with their teachers. Please sign their checkout sheets if they don't need to take semester tests on Monday or Tuesday. Seniors must turn these sheets into the office before leaving for the day. IMPORTANT: Senior grades are due by 8:00 AM on May 14. This is a firm deadline as Mrs. Davis needs to prepare final awards for that evening.
