October 7, 2016
Happy Friday! We have made it through parent/teacher conferences week. After a couple of long days, take some time to relax this weekend.
Barry and Nicki need to give the annual Iowa Youth Survey. This will take place on October 17th. We will dismiss 2nd period 5 minutes earlier that day so all students can go to advisory. The junior class will then take the survey. Advisory may be extended into 3rd period if the survey is not done. Thank you for your cooperation on this. It is something we are required to give.
Reminder picture day is the 13th, please have your picture taken when you get to school or after they are set up (you know which category you fall into).
I have a Lakes Conference Principal's meeting on the 14th in Spencer and will be gone from 9:30 until 2:30ish. If their is something you are wondering how the other schools in the conference do something let me know and I'll ask.
Also, don't forget to get me any new classes you would like to add for next year. I need to have the proposals to me by November 1.
Have a great weekend!

Assistant Principal's Corner
LCHS Student Council has kicked off our Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign for 2016. Thank you to all staff members who are willing to collect items in their rooms to help with our effort this year. We are participating in two drives this year: Support Siouxland Soldiers as well as Heroes on the Homefront. In addition to sending care packages to our troops for SSS, we are making an effort to acknowledge and thank those that are currently enlisted by providing smaller care packages for Heroes on the Homefront. This year LCMS is also collecting items to make this the largest drive LCS has done thus far to help support our troops. We will be hosting a veterans recognition to publicly acknowledge all our troops at the October 21st football game vs. Humbolt. Please encourage your students to bring items to help support our efforts and any monetary donations will be sent to the SSS organization to help supply the items that we didn't collect for their food pantry.
Student council will be traveling to Des Moines on October 31st for our annual Iowa Student Council Conference. Our counsel will be receiving an honor council award for the second straight year. Please congratulate them on their efforts as they work each day to bring great things to the students and staff at LCHS.
Continue to encourage students to do the right things each day, to try their best at what they do, and to ask for help when they need it. Thanks for all you are doing in the classroom and enjoy your weekend!

Librarian's Corner
I'm excited to announce that I have learned how to add most of our databases to the library search features. After logging into Destiny (upper right hand corner) with a user name and password (most will be first initial last name i.e. nisebrand and the password Bulldogs), the patron must click on catalog and do a regular search. Then, when results show up, there is an additional tab in the right hand corner labeled One Search. When the student clicks on One Search, the system will extend the search to multiple databases, including Britannica, most of our databases through Gale (IowaAEAOnline), Issues & Controversies, SIRS and CultureGrams. Click on the green check mark next to the word show, and the various results will come up and link directly into the database (no additional log in needed). I will be working with Follett and MackinVia to also get our ebooks linked to this search option as well. If the suggested log in does NOT work for you ,please let me know and I will let you know what yours is!

Are you a Google Sheets user? Do you want to know how to format the rows so that they are alternate colors? Would you like to be able to create a database? Did you know you can search across workbooks in a sheet? Wish you could freeze a sheet for scrolling purposes? Wouldn't it be nice to be notified when someone makes a changed to a shared form? If these topics inerest you, click here to learn about them.
Educator Appreciation Days at Barnes & Nobles are October 8-16. You can get 25% off of the list price of books, toys, games, music, movies & more.

Success Center Update
We are continuously assessing and reassessing our students to determine the skills they most need to address. Last week we completed midterm testing on over 75 students, and with their STAR scores combined with both grades and performance in the classroom, we have identified an additional ten for intervention. While we do everything we can to teach skills in the context of your classes and material, our main focus in here is on skill building, not homework completion. If you have identified specific skills your student(s) is/are missing, please let me know. I will do everything I can to help! Thank you for letting us know in advance if you anticipate there are activities or material with which students will struggle. Knowing ahead eliminates the excuses and helps us be better prepared to help your students.
