Happy Friday! I don't know about you, but I always think the short weeks seem to take more out of me than the normal 5 day school week. Maybe I am trying to squeeze too much into the 4 days.
I hope everyone had a great week! Adam and I are trying to make an effort to be out in the halls more. I am also starting to visit classrooms. I have made into a few classrooms this week already and have seen some good activities taking place. Please continue to challenge our students and push them out of their comfort zones.
Some dates you will want to keep in mind: September 11 - In-Service, September 18 - Evac Drill, September 21 - Midterm, September 25 - In-Service, and September 27 - Homecoming.
For the evac drill, if your classes crosses 3rd Ave, please make sure the students are up on the sidewalk and not standing in the street. Chief Schipper asked that we remind the students as they will have fire trucks coming down the street. Otherwise, he was happy with our first drill. Please make sure you take roll and report any students that are missing. Please check for extra's, you never know if I'll send a student to other evac site to make sure these students are reported as extras.
For midterms, please enter comments under Q1. Any student with a grade of D+ to F should have comments. This also would be a good time to start scheduling PASS Plan meetings. Parent Teacher Conferences are on Oct. 3 & 7. This would be a good time to schedule meetings with the parents you need to see rather than wait and see if they schedule conferences.

Assistant Principal's Happenings
Good morning and Happy Friday --
Things I'm thankful for:
Thank you for your continued enforcement of the cell policy.
Thank you for your continued insistence on setting high standards in your classrooms to start the year--even for kids that may be resistant to your expectations. Keep holding the bar high and supporting kids to get there.
A big thank you to Amy Davis for helping me to navigate all the reports necessary for the new absentee laws. We really appreciate all of your work, Amy!
Things I'm working on:
Yesterday I had the chance to practice "Planned Teaching" with some 9th boys regarding hallway behavior. I :
*Introduced the skill (How to walk in the hallway)
*Described appropriate behavior (appropriate speed, keeping hands to self, going with the flow of traffic, appropriate voice tone and choice of language)
*Gave a reason (So that no one gets hurt in the hallway during passing period. Also, you aren't in Middle School anymore. This is how it works in the High School.)
*Practice (I made them go back to the end of the hallway and practice appropriate hallway behavior as they walked toward me)
It may seem elementary, but it worked well. I will continue to reinforce this as needed with this group.
Don't forget about Preventative Prompts -- it may help head off some problems before they become problems.
Things I need help with:
Please help enforce the dress code, especially with midriffs. If we can catch this earlier in the day, it saves a fight later. They like to claim "no one said anything this morning....". I know these are often uncomfortable conversations. If we all help, this will get easier. Thank you.
Things I'm thinking about:
A balancing act: recognizing how trauma in a student's past may manifest itself in behaviors at school, and having some empathy -- balanced with the fact that we are all responsible for our choices and individual actions and all of us can be held to high standards of behavior and effort. If you have thoughts, I would be happy to discuss it:)
Reminder:
If your LCHS group/team wants a float in the HoCo parade, you still need to fill out a parade entry form. See me for details. Thanks.
Also, please fill out this form if you haven't already.
Grateful,
Moss
