Happy Friday! Thank you again for all the great things you do for our students! I hope everyone got plenty to eat this week, there definitely was no shortage of food. If you get a chance, please thank Primebank for the breakfast pizza, Pizza Ranch, and Bob's Drive Inn for the lunches on Wednesday and Thursday.
I had the opportunity to present our top 10 seniors at the Rotary Club on Tuesday. That is always a fun time to see how the students interact with community members and it is nice that the Rotary invites the top 10 to come to this lunch meeting. Each year, they have a speaker that challenges the students to use their leadership and gifts to help others. It is a good message for the students to hear.
The seniors are down to 6 days left of classes. If you have a senior failing a class, it is important that you communicate with the family and myself. I have been running credit checks and there are 10 seniors that could be in trouble if they continue to fail the class or classes. Seniors have until May 18 to get all needed classes to passing in order to participate in graduation exercises on Sunday. Those that are not passing at that time, will be expected to come back to school on May 23 and work on the class or classes needed to pass to graduate. If by May 26, the class is still not have a passing grade, it will be completed in summer school.
Mr. Wingert has graciously volunteered to help check in senior computers on the 13th. He will be in the library and all seniors will go in there and check in the computers. He will put them in stacks for each senior advisory and then have students help get the computers to the correct room.
For the other students, we will check in computers on May 24. On this day I will be sending the students to advisory for the last 15 minutes of the day. I will need you to make sure the computer/charger checked out to them matches what is on the spreadsheet. This is the link to the google spreadsheet where the computer devices were inputed: https://docs.google.com/
During advisory on Monday, Mrs. Permswaran will be taking a picture of the seniors wearing a shirt or sweatshirt from the college they will be attending next year.
During advisory on May 16, Sophomores and Juniors will meet in the competition gym to learn about a new program starting here next year called iJAG. iJAG stands for Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates. It is a program that will serve between 40-60 students who are risk of dropping out. It assists them in the areas of career development, leadership development, service learning, and civic and social responsibilities. This is a 12 month program, so this person will still work with these students during the summer and one year after graduation. iJAG is currently taking applications through www.indeed.com. This employee will work for iJAG, but we will provide a classroom for them. They will teach a class for 4 periods throughout the day and then will be working on helping these students find internships, potential college's to attend depending on interests, taking these students on college visits, etc.
I won't be able to approve any more personal leave for May 12, 13, 19, or 20. We have double digit subs those days. Thanks for your understanding on this.
On May 26, the students district wide are dismissed 2 hours early. All district staff will be expected to meet in the high school commons by 2:00 pm for the departing staff recognition.
Have a great weekend!
Assistant Principal's Happenings
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! I want to thank each of you for everything you do everyday. Our students are so fortunate they are to have teachers who truly care and put so much effort into helping them succeed. Please take time to remember that you are making impacts that change lives everyday.
I will be sharing out the final list for Seniors that need to take Finals Monday morning. The current list will not change too much but I will share one that only has Seniors. Please make sure you let these students know they are expected to take Finals and how that would impact their grades. Also, remind any students that have time to make up for me to complete that by Finals or they could face not being allowed to walk at graduation.
In advisory Monday, I would like everyone to remind underclassman the importance of coming to school. We had far more truants this year than the past two, especially recently. I still have six County Attorney Meetings coming up to deal with this issue but this is something I want to make a priority next year and will be looking into other districts on how they handle truancy. The best solution I know we can still work on the remainder of the year is making connections with students that struggle to find a connection at school. Please take time to reach out to kids that you know have a hard time coming to school and give them encouragement to finish out the year.
