Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. We will be starting the registration process for the 21-22 school year in the next week. Letters were mailed home to the incoming 8th grade parents informing them that we will not have our live registration meetings. Judd and Melissa have a video online that goes over what we would have discussed that night. My goal is to have the bulk of kids registered by mid February. Hopefully, I then can meet with departments to go over numbers. We are about 2-3 months behind in this process than we normally are, but it will move along quickly and we will have a schedule before too long.

Thank you for the great start to second semester. If you have students who have returned to live learning from remote that have gaps, we can discuss if the success center is an appropriate placement for them. We have moved a couple in there already.

Also, thanks to those who took my survey on semester 1, if you didn't it is not too late. I really would like to get your feedback. As we move forward for 21-22, we would like to know what was good and what we need to change. Hopefully we mesh the good things we have learned through this pandemic with the good things we did before to become even better.

We are in the process of taking applications for a new biology teacher for next year. If you know any good biology teachers, please encourage them to apply. It is being advertised as open until filled.

We will be having quite a few events taking place inside our building after school hours or on the weekends. We will be hosting the district Large Group Speech (just us and Gehlen) on January 23, State Show Choir is on February 1, district Jazz Band Festival on February 15, State Large Group Speech is on February 6,  and district FFA competition on February 23. If they need to use your area, someone will talk with you.

I am putting individual results of our last screener to in your mailboxes. Please pass these out during advisory to the students. I am working on finding a good report that shows their graphs in math and reading. Once I find one I like, I'll print those off also.

Looking ahead we have our district in-service on the 20th and our third extra hour meeting on the 27th.

Have a Great Weekend!

Mark

Assistant Principal's Happenings

If you haven't checked out the Accommodation Spreadsheet for your new Special Education students please do so soon.  The Special Education Teachers have worked to update it and it is almost complete.  If you have a student that hasn't been updated yet please let me know.

Mr. Kopperud and I met with the Student Voice Group again today.  They had some great conversations and it is always interesting to hear the student side of issues.  Today's topics were about student groups and how students are treated.  A common theme was the fact that it is easier for athletes to feel connected to something at school, specifically having a coach they could talk with about issues they may be having.  They were concerned because many students are not athletes and didn't have those same connections.  Dress Code was also a frequently discussed topic.  The consensus was that both male and female teachers equally gave out "dress codes."  They did feel certain students who may be more popular were far more likely to get away with wearing something that was inappropriate. Several also stated we don't always know why a student is choosing to dress that way.  They talked about peer pressure or other underlying issues they felt to fit in so they had to bend the rules on the dress code.  If you are ever interested in more details about the conversations please stop by and I can discuss them with you.  I am hoping to have three more meetings before the end of the year.

One other thing I did ask from the last meeting was if any teachers had refreshed them on the expectations if we go remote/hybrid.  Most said they hadn't heard anything or didn't remember if the teacher did say anything in the past.  While our numbers have been the best they have the entire school year that could change quickly.  Please make sure all students understand your expectations in your classes if we ever have to make a change.
