Happy Friday! Thank you for all your work this week. I know everyone's stress level is much higher than the typical start of the school year. I will make every effort to keep you as informed as I can about what is going on with students being put into quarantine.

I have had a few questions about students put into quarantine at school and then being told they need to still go to work. I can't control what the work place tells them, some of our students work in places where they are labeled "essential employees". So if they don't show symptoms, their employer may still require them to go to work. We are also following the IDPH guidance on Evaluating Sick Students and Staff

I also want to remind you that what we are doing with online learning and decisions we make will not be perfect. Each time we have a situation we learn new things from it. The only thing we can do is try to get better and to tweak the process to make it as fair and consistent as possible.

With our students in quarantine, it is very important to make sure we have specific lessons in Schoology with instructions spelling out what they need to do. We do need to make an effort in getting lecture notes or video of lectures online so those kids can keep up with class. They are expected to be doing the work during the quarantine, it is not treated like the typical absence. Please let your students know this.

Looking ahead to next week we do have our first screener of the year. This will give us a baseline on our students and something we can use to track growth. Students will take both math and reading on this day. We also have our first evac drill on Wednesday at 9:20 am. In addition we will have our 3rd extra hour pd session that day.

Thank you for all you do for our kids! Please do not demand perfection from yourself during this time where we have kids bouncing in and out of school, this will only lead to frustration, stress, and tears. I only expect your best effort. I know I will do things that will be far from perfect as I am learning as we go through this. We will become better at this each and every day.

Have A GREAT THREE day weekend!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

I wanted to start off this post with some happy news.  Sam and I are expecting baby #3 🍼 in March!  We figured we would join the Covid Baby Boom that is expected.  I'm hoping for a girl because Sam said she would be happy with 3 if we have a girl!

Back to the school information
1. Bandanas aren't being allowed as part of the dress code- if a student doesn't have an actual mask send them to the office and we will provide one.
2. I encourage more teachers to take their classes outside with pre-approval from Dr. Iverson or myself.  Spread out and students can take a break from their masks.
3. Encourage students to use hand sanitizer when coming into the room.  We have large amounts of sanitizer so just let Mike know to refill your classroom supply.
4. I encourage you to go over the steps for logging in and using Schoology on a regular basis especially this first month.  We have a few kids that stated they didn't know how to log into Schoology which is essential as we have more isolated or quarantined.
5. If you are planning to use the lock-down browser make sure students know how to log into it on the sign-in screen and where the app is for the browser.
6. Thank you for the teachers setting up Google Meets with students that are quarantined or isolated so they can still be part of class.  This isn't required but I have heard from multiple parents how much they and their students appreciate that opportunity.

I spent a lot of my time since school started figuring out solutions for Special Education Students.  They have individual needs that we need to follow and support.  Please think about what modifications need to be made and work with the Special Education Teachers to come up with a reasonable plan for them to work on when at home.  I know the SPED Teachers and students are overwhelmed with all these changes like many of you but as long as we are continuing to do our best and give students as many opportunities as we can that is all we can ask.  Thank you to everyone for your best efforts as we work through these times!
