Happy Friday!  I hope everyone has had a great week! Thank you for the flexibility in running our screener schedule on Wednesday. The MTSS committee would like to hear your feedback on the schedule. Did you like it better with the block of time or would you rather give it during the advisory time?

On Monday during advisory, there will be a Junior class meeting to kick off their fundraiser for prom. We will meet in the competition gym.

I am kind of at a stand still for the schedule for next year right now. There are a few things that have to be decided before I can finish it. Once I have a good, workable schedule, I'll send that out. When the schedule is created, the students are loaded. PowerSchool then gives me data showing how many requests were satisfied and how many students were fully scheduled. From there, tweaks will be made to the schedule. Once I start loading students, they may see a schedule in the PowerSchool app. That will not be official until I send a schedule out to the staff first.

Looking ahead, we do have an extra hour meeting next week. We also have an evac drill on Thursday, at 1:40 pm.

Have a great weekend!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

Headphones and phones seem to be a bigger issue lately.  I believe a big part of it is the status symbol but a consequence is students are not listening in class.  Headphones are part of the electronic policy.  You can take them away and turn them into the office just like a cell phone.  Please expect students to have them out of their ears in class unless you have given them permission.  We are also looking at our cell phone policy.  We would like to have an open meeting to get feedback on some ideas. I will send this out and include more information in an email but we are planning to meet on March 19th at 7:30 AM if you would like to give input.

The Attendance/Truant lists have been very long this past week.  This is partially due to the new trimester and parents not calling in but many kids were tardy not truant.  Please make sure you are updating attendance as students show up.

We have had a lot of reports of harassment and bullying going on in and out of the classrooms and outside of school.  Please take some time over the next week to remind kids they can talk to you.  Remind them that we can't help if we don't know what is happening.  If you do see or hear something please address it and let me know as well.

The promenade and concession committees for prom are working hard. They may miss an advisory once in a while, but most of the groups are meeting outside of school. The theme is Roaring 20s.
As I have emailed out, the video media students will be taking a field trip to watch KCAU film their 11:30 broadcast. We will then go to WITCC to see their broadcasting setup and visit with the instructors on opportunities for careers in video, broadcasting, and audio/video editing.

Success Center Updates

Happy Leap Day tomorrow!

I read an article this week that looks at the Gradual Release of Responsibility process (I Do, We Do, You Do) from a completely different perspective.  Ginsburg (2015) suggests flipping the process; instead of ending with the "You Do" part, begin with the student inquiry, then scaffold backwards to the direct instruction.  This way, the teacher makes connections AFTER students have explored the material so there is relevance and purpose.  This fits well with the discussions we have had this year regarding inquiry-based learning.  You might also consider adding a "You Do Together" component to encourage peer collaboration.  The more students work together and take ownership of their learning, the more likely they are to remember the material and make connections.
