December 13, 2019

Happy Friday! Thank you for your patience Wednesday during in-service. I know Mrs. Zeka and I were frustrated because that wasn’t really the training we wanted for you on the Star platform. We will work to get you the information needed to use the program. Mrs. Zeka and I are going to set the students up in classes by periods, for example Modern Algebra 2, Period 2. If you would like your classes set up, please let us know. I will be starting with the Math courses; Mrs. Zeka will work on English; then we will divide up the rest. You will then be able to pull up your students without having to select the students each time from the class list. Hopefully, this will make accessing this data easier. I am also going to create a new bell schedule and take time away from all classes that we will run when we give the Star assessments. Since we can see how long the test took, we will give the amount of time it took to get 90% of the students done. Students who do not finish will be sent to the library where they can log in and finish the test.
Thank you for providing feedback on the 15-Day Challenge activity that Mrs. Permeswaran presented on Wednesday. I will try to answer as many questions as I can; if you are still confused or have other questions, please talk to me or a CIA member.
The purpose of creating intervention time in class is to provide Tier 2 support to students when Tier 1 is not working. Remember that Tier 1 is guaranteed curriculum for all students. I know many of your minds went right to your most challenging students. Odds are, your most challenging students are going to need Tier 3 interventions, which a school team will need to take on. These students provide a whole different set of challenges. However, we still need to try the Tier 2 supports to document if they did or did not work for those students. Part of the documentation is to help us see if a student may need special education services. When we talk about interventions, we are not talking about every standard in the Iowa Core. Use your essential learnings as your driving force in determining what needs interventions. Many of you have been in this profession for a number of years, so you probably have anticipated where students will struggle and you have provided interventions in your class already. I have been to numerous rooms where interventions are being provided to students who were struggling. We are just asking you to document this now.
As we progress into the idea of the 15-day challenge, we will run into times where we will get frustrated and maybe a little angry. With the state moving to a growth model, just getting kids to proficient is not enough to keep us off any of the state’s lists for schools needing improvement. So we need to look at what we are doing and try to make sure every student makes at least one year’s growth. Many of our low kids need to make multiple years of growth if we want them to have the skills necessary to meet their definition of a successful life. The hope is that the built-in intervention will work so we won’t have to mess with the schedule to add a separate time slot for interventions.

To help with intervention/enrichment ideas, CIA will be presenting different strategies at the January early dismissal. Because of this, we will use the March early dismissal to discuss your 15-day challenge instead of the February date. The MTSS committee is meeting this coming week and will finalize a spreadsheet on what we need to track. The purpose of tracking is to determine if interventions are working for students and to determine if this time is enough to help the students. By putting them on a spreadsheet, we can create a database of interventions to try in class. That way if you are struggling with coming up with an intervention, you can check the spreadsheet to see what others have used.
Looking ahead, our next extra hour meeting is on December 18. Semester tests will be on January 10 and 13. January 14 will be the make up day. Grades will be due then on January 15 at 8:30 am. I will store grades at that time and Mr. Formanek will run the eligibility lists and enter in the no credits for attendance contracts.

Congrats to the Quiz Bowl teams. The Varsity group placed 1st at Storm Lake and the JV squad placed 2nd.

Have a great weekend!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

I hope everyone has been having a good week! Students have been pushing the limits a little more than usual since Thanksgiving but please make sure you are keeping them accountable.  This doesn't always mean detention- I find talking to parents usually shows that something else is happening with that kid which is why they are acting out.  Getting the parents on board with the discipline is also huge to making improvements for our students.

Things are busy as we have had several changes in the schedule that you were not counting on this week.  Lots of you also have sick children at home to take care of which always seems to create more work because now you have to prepare for a sub.  Please remember that we have to adjust to make things work and do what is right for students.  I am stealing this meme from one of the memes I saw Mr. Starr post this week on Facebook.  Have an awesome weekend!
