Happy Friday! You all survived the long parent/teacher conference week! Thank you for all you do to help our students achieve. Many times your hard work goes unnoticed by the parents/students, but it is appreciated by all. This would be good time to think about and nominate one of your peers for employee of the month. Forms can be found here, scroll down and find the form towards the bottom of the page.
Looking ahead we have our extra-hour meeting on Wednesday. This will be in your departments continuing the work from the last in-service. The district in-service date is on October 18. Our second meeting building time will be on October 25.
If you haven't gotten me your new course proposals yet, please do so by November 1. We are already planning our registration and 8th grade career day. Hard to believe we start this early, but this does allow us to get schedules to students before they leave for the summer and to have them make changes sooner.
Have a great weekend!

Please continue to keep Mr. Jentz, Mrs. Nelson, and Mr. Starr in your thoughts as they heal from their procedures.
We have a few staff members attending the ITEC Conference on October 16 and 17. They are: Nancy Isebrand, Michael Bahr, Trent Eckstaine, and Erin Ohrlund.
Then Terry Fitzgerald and David Den Herder will be attending a training on the new Social Studies Standards the state adopted. This is on October 19 & 20.
The Science Department will be attending module 3 of the NGSS on October 24.
Dress Code: Reminder that if you see something that is not appropriate, then tell the student - don't let them go on to the next class without taking the time to talk to them. Sending a note to the office may not be effective as we may not be in our offices. It is not Beth and Amy's job to handle dress code issues. If you question if what a student is wearing is inappropriate, please say something to the student.
Thinking about the classroom and some of the issues that have come up in the last week or two, I have included some links for you to check out in regards to positive behavior and building a positive classroom:

The LCHS Student Council will be kicking off their annual fundraiser with the Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign. This fall more than 130 local soldiers will be traveling overseas to fight for our freedom. The student council will run their campaign starting at the October 13th football game. It will be "Camo" night and we will begin collecting monetary donations as well as food donations for our packages that we send overseas to our soldiers. We will collect items from October 13th - November 3rd. Success Center Update
A really great strategy to get kids thinking about the text they are reading is FQR. The best thing about the FQR strategy is that it works for any type of text - literature, informational text, technical text, etc. FQR stands for FACT, QUESTION, RESPONSE. Students are introduced to a passage of text. As they read, they are asked to do three things: First, they are directed to find facts in the text and write them in their notes or on a three column chart. Next, for each fact, students write a question they have about the fact, something they want to explore, or a question they still have about the subject. Finally, students write a personal response to each fact/question. What did they learn? How did the elements of the story fit together? How will they be able to use this information in the future? etc.
Two really great things about FQR? It makes students think about the text - it allows them opportunities to make connections with what they are reading, and I'm always amazed at the questions they come up with. It also provides another way for students to think about the material that helps to make sense of their notes. If you are interested, there are lots of really great FQR organizers available, including this one.
