Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. As we wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week, Kyle and I would like to show our appreciation for all that you do for our students. We will have lunch set up for you in the lounge, please stop in during your lunch time and help yourself.
This morning we are starting the interview process for the associate principal position. I'll be unavailable from 8:15 to 11:00. Last week we did hire a new FACS teacher, Alayna Gorter. This will be her first teaching position as she just graduated from the college located north of Sioux Falls and south of Watertown. She graduated from Central Lyon High School.
On Monday, the board approved the honor's program proposal. So next school year we will need to start working on what the honor sections will look like. When we have our freshmen orientation, I'll discuss this program and make the parents and students aware of it for the first time.
During cabinet this week, we were discussing the uses of artificial intelligence to write papers, etc. One of the more commons ones is ChatGPT, although there are many others. Some of the new ones are becoming better and harder to detect. If you assign papers/essays for class, you may want to start to consider if the students need to write the paper in class instead of out of class so you can monitor this better. I was messing around with it and had it write an argumentative essay on standards based grading. In no time, I had an essay that I could submit if it was an assignment. Link to essay This took under 2 minutes for the computer to kick out. There are lots of positive uses of AI that can benefit the classroom and the work that you do. This article provides more details, "Educators can't beat ChatGPT, so show them how to embrace it."
On Monday, there will be a sophomore class meeting during advisory in the little theater. Rich Ziettlow will be presenting the Youth on Main Street program and encouraging students to sign up for it for the 2023-2024 school year.
Today is the seniors last day of class. Seniors have until May 17 to get all needed classes to passing in order to participate in graduation exercises on Sunday. Those that are not passing at that time, will be expected to come back to school on May 22 and work on the class or classes needed to pass to graduate. If by June 1, the class is still does not have a passing grade, it will be completed in summer school.
Cody Wurth has volunteered to help check in senior computers today. He will be in room 211 and all seniors will go in there and check in the computers. He will put them in stacks for each senior advisory and then have students help get the computers to the correct room.
For the other students, we will go to advisory the last 15 minutes of 8th period to check in computers. This will take place on May 26. All students will turn them in regardless if they are taking semester tests. If a student needs a computer for the test, have him/her use one that was checked in. Please make sure you mark everything on the google doc.
The week of May 15 is college/post high school commitment week for seniors. In honor of that on May 17 please where a shirt/sweatshirt from your alma matter. You may also wear jeans that day with your alma matter clothing.

Assistant Principal's Happenings
I hope everyone enjoyed their Teacher Appreciation Week! We are down to the final 2 weeks of full classes before summer! Reminder, we will have lunch for you today in the library.
If you have Seniors in a class with underclassmen and you think they need a quieter setting to take their Final, reach out to Mrs. Sadoski. Her room will be available on Senior test days but please talk to her first so she knows what the students should be working on for their Final. Mrs. Carter can also assist in the mornings, Dr. Iverson sent an email yesterday with the information. I will hopefully send out the underclassmen Finals list next week Monday. I will send more details on that but they are the same requirements as the Seniors.
The list of students who need to finish time for Tardies is getting smaller. We had almost 20 spent Wednesday afternoon picking up trash to make up the time. I will work on completing the rest of the time with students by the end of the year. Next week, I will hand out the final Attendance Contracts for the year. Please let me know if students are making up time before and after school with you if they say they are on a contract.
Mr. Kopperud sent out information for summer school earlier this week. If you have any concerns please contact him or myself. Our current list is quite large so make sure we are working with students to get their classes passed!
Enjoy your weekend!
