January 24, 2020

Happy Friday! I don't know where this week seemed to go. I had intended to write this part of the Friday Focus early in the week, but now it is Thursday and I am just getting to it.

We will meet as an entire staff on Wednesday, 1/29 in the library for our extra hour meeting. CIA members will review the 15 day challenge. Something I want you to keep in mind when we do this is that we are being judged differently than in the past. We can no longer just focus on students who were not proficient on the state tests, we need to make sure all students grow. A student who was proficient on last years ISASP but doesn't make growth will count against us. So the old game rules no longer apply, and we need to adapt to the new rules. On the school report cards, growth has the biggest impact on our score that determines if we need to do the SAMI process. The point of the 15 day challenge is to have scheduled intervention time during the class period. Interventions need to be individualized. It is possible to group kids with common skill deficiencies, but we need to focus on each student. Just imagine each student has their own IEP. So what do you do for kids who already have it when you do your interventions? You will need to give them enrichment activities that support what you are doing in class. These students need to grow also. If building intervention time into the class period doesn't work, then we will be looking at changing our master schedule up to provide a 30 minute intervention period every day. Part of providing interventions is keeping track of the data. This doesn't need to be complicated. I would enter my class roster in a spreadsheet, rotate the headings intervention and growth across the top. When a student gets an intervention put a check under the intervention column. When you give a formative assessment and he/she improved put a +, if he/she doesn't improve put a -. It would then be easy to say 12 of the 26 kids needed an intervention on this essential learning. Of the 12 that needed the intervention 8 improved. That is really all the data we need to keep.

On 1/27, Mrs. Isebrand will need to have a Junior class meeting to discuss everyone's favorite topic, Prom. Mrs. Isebrand will send out the location of the meeting, Junior class sponsors should attend this as well.

I will be out of the building on January 30 as I attend a college and career readiness workshop/visit in Sioux Falls.

Have a great Monday!
Mark

Assistant Principal's Happenings

Hopefully, next week we can get on a normal schedule for the semester.  I know it has probably been a tough start with the snow days and late starts but please work on making connections with your new students.  Several teachers have reached out to me and others about concerns with some of their new students.  If you have kids that you are having a hard time reaching, I encourage you to reach out to other teachers as they may know what works and doesn't with that student.

I will be asking for nominations for Boy's State soon.  If you have Junior boys in mind please let me know.  These Juniors should have strong traits of good citizenship, leadership, and character.

A reminder for coaches/activity sponsors, please look at the ineligibility list I sent out.  If you think you should have gotten access to it and didn't let me know.  If you have any questions on any students or have a student complete their ineligibility let me know as well.  None of those students should be performing/competing until they are off that list.

Notes from the Librarian/Student Council

Junior class meeting will be in the competition gym. Mike will have bleachers pulled out for that. Please direct the students to sit there. Junior teachers will also need to be there. I will have a sign up sheet for the three different major groups. Ms. Grell and Mrs. Ludwigs have volunteered to oversee promenade, but do not have juniors, so a few junior teachers will need to fill in for them to get sign ups on Monday.

Hoops for Troops is actively going on. Thank you so much for helping collect items for the troops. I know Dylan Lamp is currently deployed and Austin Parrott will be leaving in February for a station overseas, so we will be sending them packages. IF you know of someone deployed, please get me their address as soon as possible. We usually send multiple care packages to a few soldiers, knowing they will share with their unit (and it allows us to send a greater variety to the troops). We hope to pack on February 10 so we can get them in the mail. Maddi Pippett emailed a template for cards, so we'd love if your advisory would make cards to send out as well.

A new semester of video media has started. I have a total of 15 new students. I am working on their press passes, so for now they may be out with cameras and tripods without a pass. Again, if you have an upcoming event or something exciting going on in your class, please let me know and we will try to get someone to do a short video about it. It will be a while as they have much to learn, but I also have 5 returners, so they will continue to produce work. Look for an email next week for our next episode (featuring work the 1st semester students had to do as a final).

Success Center Updates

For any of you starting a new semester-long class, please add me to your Google Classroom or Schoology page either as a student or as a co-teacher.  Being able to access your schedules, notes, and assignments helps me to keep your students on track in your classes and eliminates the excuses that students so creatively make.  If you have multiple sections of the same course, I only need access to one section (assuming you are covering the same material in all of the sections.)  Thank you for your help with this.

Technology Tidbits by Mr. Wingert

2020s visions: We'll get flying cars just before becoming software-based people

Do you ever collect data in a Google Sheet and then wish it was in a more readable form? Maybe the Google Add-on Document Studio is for you. It’s your choice whether you want your final document in PDF format, Google Sheets, Docs, or Slides, Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, or Excel, HTML or Plain text, or an ePub eBook. There are some limits to how much the free version will allow you to do but it is definitely worth checking out.

Many of us use Google Forms on a somewhat regular basis. I find it to be a very useful tool and I delight in learning something new about it. This post has 2 good lessons (with videos): 1--Set Default Point Values and Question Requirements, 2--Combine Questions from Multiple Google Forms Into One.

Originality reports and rubrics now generally available for Google Classroom users. Originality reports check a student's work for matches across billions of web pages and books.  This can make it easier for instructors to evaluate the academic integrity of the student’s work and provide them constructive feedback.
Students can also use originality reports to check for missed citations or poor paraphrasing before they turn in a document. This gives them the opportunity to improve their work and learn from their mistakes before final submissions.
With the new rubrics feature, educators can now:
Create a rubric as they create an assignment.
Reuse rubrics from previous assignments rather than creating them from scratch.
Export and import Classroom rubrics to share with other instructors.
Grade students work with a rubric from both the “student listing page” and Classroom’s grading view, where instructors can select rating levels as they review the assignment.

As you are performing your 15 day challenges consider using a coach to assist you. We can help with data collection, data analysis, interventions, and enrichments.
