Happy Friday! Everyone has made it through the full first week of school. Thank you for all you have done to provide our students with a top notch education.
We have our first building in-service on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 am. During this first meeting your group will have one task to complete. 1. Go over your group norms from last year and make revisions if necessary. Just a reminder that your Tier 2 plans are due today. Please upload that document to the team drive I shared with you. To access it, go to drive, then click on team. During our extra hour meeting on September 26, Joy Gonnerman, will be joining us to talk about ENDS or Electronic Nicotine Devices. She will have some examples of JUUL devices. These are becoming more and more popular among teens. The really look like usb drives.
It always amazes me on how quickly everyone gets back into the normal routine. We have had a good start to the school year. Keep pushing the students to reach higher than they think they can.
I did email out some instructions on how to sign up for our PD class. You should be able to register for it by searching the course number on the AEA Online Learning website. If you have difficulties, please see me and I will do my best to help. Remember by just attending and working at our district inservices you are getting the hours needed for credit renewal. If you are doing the grad credit, the extra hour meetings will help get you to the total hours, but you will still need to do some work on the plan outside of our normal 8:00 - 4:00 time contract time.
With homecoming quickly approaching, I want to encourage you to participate in the dress up days. The students always enjoy having the staff participate. Speaking of homecoming, Mr. Utesch and I will alway enjoy the extra help at the dance. It is also a great way to work off an activity for your comp passes to attend events.
The state of Iowa has launched a campaign titled "See Something, Say Something". It doesn't hurt for us to remind students of this message. Let them know that they can tell any adult in the school. If a student does give you information, please pass it on to us as we can get the police's help in investigating the credibility of the threat. Please don't you make the judgement if it is credible or not.
Finally, looking ahead to next week, we do have an evac drill on Wednesday at 10:10 am. Please make sure you take roll and let those teachers in charge of the area know who you are missing and who you have extra.
Enjoy your extra day off.

"Bulldogs Got Game" is the theme for this year's Homecoming. We will play Storm Lake on September 21st with the homecoming dance to follow. Spirit Week Days are as follows: Monday - Scrabble (mismatch), Tuesday - Life (career/college choice), Wednesday - Battle Royale (class colors: 12th - black; 11th - blue; 10th - green; 9th - pink; teachers/administrators - purple or red; support staff - yellow or red); Thursday - Cranium (nerd), Friday - Checkers/Spirit Day. Battle Royale Wednesday will also include a challenge for all grade levels. We will be asking students to donate a new pair of socks for the Sioux City Gospel Mission. Donations will be accepted in 1st-period classrooms Monday through Wednesday the week of Homecoming. A tally of participation by class level's and the number of socks donated during the week will bring bragging rights to the class that does the most!
Reminder to sign up to help out with Homecoming the week of September 17th - 21st. Sign up sheet is in the teacher's lounge and signatures are due on September 14th.
Class meetings will take place on September 4th during advisory to discuss Homecoming Parade plans. Please report to your meetings in the designated places:
Juniors - Carey Gym
Sophomores - Lunch Room
Freshman - Little Theater
All seniors will remain in their advisories and will vote for 2018 Homecoming royalty. If you have a mix of seniors with other 9-11 grade students, then send your seniors to another teacher or the library so that you may attend your designated meeting. Mr. Utesch will be in the library for any seniors that need a place to go.

Instructional Coaches Technology Tid Bits
I have put another video on my website about how to check to see if the permission settings on Google documents you intend to share are correct. I am hoping to soon add information about Google Classroom and also New Google Sites.
Last year “Whats Going On in This Graph?” was published monthly, but this school year, it will be published weekly, most Wednesdays from September to April. Each week an engaging Times graph is selected and paired with a simple set of questions — asking students what they notice, what they wonder, and what they think is going on in the graph.

Success Center Update
It's starting out to be a great year in the Success Center! We are already working with about 40 students in all four grades, so it looks like it will be a busy semester. Thank you for inviting me as a co-teacher in your Schoology and Google classrooms. Being able to access your notes and assignments eliminates one more source of excuses for our students and helps me to reinforce your expectations. If you teach multiple sections of the same class, I only need to be included in one section. Have a great weekend!
