Happy Friday! Again, welcome back to everyone. You have survived your first day of school for another year. Thank you for your dedication as we strive to provide the best education to our students.

On Wednesday, the students will be receiving their ALICE training. All meetings will take place in the Little Theater. Juniors will be during 1st, Seniors during 2nd, Sophomores during 3rd, and Freshmen during 4th. Tell your students to report to the Little Theater during the assigned time. If a student misses his/her assigned time, but is here during another period I do want him/her to attend one of the other periods.

I just want to take a moment to go over some of the reminders that we skimmed over at the staff meeting on Monday. Don't forget grades need to be updated every Monday at 8:30 am for the previous week. Obviously, if you have a large project, I don't expect you to spend all weekend grading them so the grades can be updated. But timely feedback is important for student learning. You should also make sure you update the assignment page on the website. This needs to be done Friday before you leave for the weekend.

This year Neal and I are going to try to get into more classrooms for walk-throughs. We are going to be focusing on some of the APL strategies again. They are: objectives, checking for understanding, and closure. For those of you who have not had APL training, talk with Jill Brown as she will be happy to assist you in this area.

We did redesign our Tier 2 Career Development Plans. The new form is found on the website that was shared with you. Part of the Tier 2 plans is to do ongoing reflections on how you are progressing with your plan. Remember you can use this as one renewal credit to renew your license. The first reflection will be due when we meet on November 15-19, the second on February 25-27, and the third at the end of the year. Tier 2 plans will be due on August 31 at 3:30 pm. I will have you complete the reflection, then schedule a time to meet with Neal or I to review your plan and discuss your reflection on the dates listed above.

As always remember your school email is part of public record and may be requested. So, with that being said, please refrain from using your school email account to vent about students, use for non-school related business (joke, political emails), or vent about other items or people. The other thing to remember is your email is filtered. Messages can be flagged for inappropriate words/content. If a message is flagged, it is then sent to all administration. Please do not use your school email for personal business that you would not want people to know about. My advice is to use a Gmail/Hotmail account for everything not work-related. One other item you should be aware of is if you use your own phone for school email, your phone would fall under the public records request. Keep this in mind when you conduct business using school accounts.

Finally, one more reminder to take the time to call home to parents, especially when their child is doing well or was helpful to you. These calls home help give a positive image of the school and you. It also helps you build an ally if you ever need one.

Be Extraordinary!

Students as Leaders

Thank you to Ms. James and the FFA members for their work at the fair this summer. I heard many great comments about your efforts while I walked around the fair.

Congrats to Christian Koch and Claire Ohlrichs. They were crowned king and queen during the fair.

Maddi Pippett, Joey DeBoer, Autumn Wessel, Morgan Avise, and Mrs. Isebrand attended the National Student Council Conference in Minneapolis, MN, in June. Mrs. Isebrand presented during the advisors' roundtable, while the students presented their Support Siouxland Soldiers project to other students.

Staff News

Doug Martin was the keynote speaker at the Kennedy Space Center in July.

Congrats to Cliff and Kelly Collins on the birth of their first granddaughter!

Assistant Principal's Happenings

Welcome Back to a new school year!  Hope that everyone had a great summer and spent time with family and friends!  The LCHS student council has been hard at work already planning this year's homecoming festivities.

"Bulldogs Got Game" is the theme for this year's Homecoming.  We will play Storm Lake on September 21st with the homecoming dance to follow. Spirit Week Days are as follows: Monday - Scrabble (mismatch), Tuesday - Life (career/college choice), Wednesday - Battle Royale (class colors: 12th - black; 11th - blue; 10th - green; 9th - pink; teachers/administrators - purple or red; support staff - yellow or red); Thursday - Cranium (nerd), Friday - Checkers/Spirit Day.  Battle Royale Wednesday will also include a challenge for all grade levels. We will be asking students to donate a new pair of socks for the Sioux City Gospel Mission. Donations will be accepted in 1st-period classrooms Monday through Wednesday the week of Homecoming.  A tally of participation by class level's and the number of socks donated during the week will bring bragging rights to the class that does the most!

Special Education Reminders for Classroom Teachers:

1. You are responsible for making sure that all accommodations are being met in your classrooms (it is the law per the IEP document).  We cannot defend you in court if you are not following what is on the IEP and providing what is outlined for the student's success.

2. Communicate regularly with the IEP teachers to clarify needs and accommodations for students that you may have (consult the accommodations information shared with you on google docs).

3. If concerns come up, address them first with the IEP teachers.  If problems cannot be resolved, then bring it to Mr. Utesch.  If we cannot come up with a solution at that point, then we will go to Dr. Iverson.  From there we will consult the central office for guidance if it becomes a bigger issue.

4. Provide all class materials and plans to the special education teacher at least a week ahead of time so that additional accommodations can be made by the special educator if needed. DO NOT hand them an assessment the day before class and expect them to change it - make your changes and then have them look at it to see if additional changes need to be made.

5. Mix up instruction in the classroom - let the special education instructor teach the lesson sometimes and you, the classroom teacher, be the helper in the room.  It is nice to share in the responsibilities in the co-taught classroom.

Librarian's News

The library will be open to study halls on Thursday, August 30. If you would like your classes to get books prior to that, please schedule a time with the library staff. I would love to do an orientation scavenger hunt for 9th graders that would take up 1/2 of the class or a full class period. Please let me know ASAP if you would like to schedule this.
