April 13, 2018
Happy Friday the 13th! Another 4 day week and more snow for Saturday, sounds about normal. Hopefully everything will be melted by Monday. With all the weather issues, our spring sports have been having a fun time trying to get in their competitions and practices. As contests are rescheduled, please remain flexible with the students this is beyond their control.
During Advisory on Monday, I will need the Sophomores to report to the little theater for an informational meeting regarding the Youth on Main Street program. Next Monday, April 23, I will meet with the Seniors to go over graduation, end of the year stuff, and Amy Schmidt will have them fill out their surveys. Senior advisory teachers, please have them complete their 4th qtr mid term reflections this Monday, everyone else can do it the 23rd. They should be in your mailboxes.
On April 24th, Ryan Wise, the Iowa Director of DOE will be visiting our district. I will be taking him around the building that morning. He wants to visit the CTE areas and see how our TLC program is going. We will be visiting the CTE rooms that morning. We will be in our building at 9:15 until 9:45, then we will head to T and I.
With the Iowa Assessments almost behind us, we now focus on our local assessment. Junior English, math and science teachers will need to give the local assessments to the Juniors the week of April 23rd during class. Teachers needing to give the assessment should have received an email from me earlier this week.
Dr. Webner sent an email out earlier this week regarding Twitter and copyright. There have been 5 cases in Iowa where an author has sued the school, and won, where a staff member has retweeted his copyrighted material. The instance here is someone took a picture of a page out of his book and tweeted it, then people retweeted the picture. The school districts have had to pay out $30,000 to this person. So be careful what you tweet and retweet.
The board has decided that our last day of school will be May 30. On the last day, we will get out two hours early for the retirement recognition. Please check out the student handbook if you are already curious about the testing schedule.
We are getting tight with subs as the year closes out, please try to be here if at all possible. I do understand life happens, and sometimes it can't be avoided.
If didn't get the chance to come to the play last night, you have 2 more chances to see it. Performances will be tonight and Saturday at 7:00 pm.
Have another snowy weekend. This is April?

Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Johnson are taking a group of students to the Iowa State Fashion Show on April 13th. Students attending are Morgan Brewer, Marriah Feller, Bailey Gettner, Madelyn Kass, Jordan Kneip, Brady Kuiken, Lianett Lopez, Cassidy Lowe, Kennedi Masuen, Liz Parks, Sydney Schurr, and Cadyn Willhelm.
Congratulations to the following student who have been selected to attend Iowa Boy's State this summer in Johnston, IA. Wiar Wia, Bryce Timp, Joey De Boer, and Landen Parmelee will be attending and representing LCHS! Congratulations Boys!
Congratulations Ethan Hulinsky and Kyle Herbst. They placed in the top 10 at the USD Battle of the Bots. The boys were tasked with coding a robot to guide itself out of a 4 x 8 foot maze using some AI principles.
As we continue to work our way toward summer break, remember to be patient with the students and encourage them to give it their all. Keeping them in class is an important solution to their success.
Please check the updated google form that was shared with you during first semester regarding students who owe time for credits. If you are working with one of these students, please send me a note so that I can give them credit toward their time that is owed.
Next week I will work on a first draft for Seniors who will need to take semester tests. I will share this on a google document for you to view and to share with your students.
Happy Friday the 13th!
This is not library news, but it is from the librarian: As you are aware, prom is next Saturday. I will be supervising students that will be setting up the decorations on Friday. I will be sending out a list hopefully soon. I know a few students expressed they had tests, so I encouraged them to go to class to take their tests and then come back to the gyms. Otherwise, the students will not be attending classes on Friday. They should all be touching base with you before Friday.
Adam Juarez has an interesting project idea to increase student engagement and help them "make notes" vs "take notes" using technology. Click here to read about it in his blog #AlwaysInBeta.
Mind-bending new screen technology uses ‘magic pixel’ to display different content to multiple people. This means if I look at the screen from the left side I see one thing. If a second person looks at it from the right side they see something completely different. Click here to read more and to see video examples.

Librarian's News
Just a reminder, I will be taking a number of students Tuesday to Book Bash competition. This is a contest in which students (as a team of 6 or less) read a number of books from a list and compete against other teams. Last year, over 145 students from schools in NWAEA competed at the high school level. We have 4 teams competing, and a number of these students have read all 20 of the titles on the list. They should be double checking with their morning teachers what the will be missing. We will be back by 1.This is not library news, but it is from the librarian: As you are aware, prom is next Saturday. I will be supervising students that will be setting up the decorations on Friday.
