January 5, 2018

Happy Friday! One more week of first semester then we start the second half of the year. I only have a few announcements/reminders.

I hope everyone had a great break and you were able to relax for awhile. Looking ahead to next week we will have advisory on Monday. We will watch another episode of The Harbor. I believe we are on Season 2 Episode 2. There is also a shelter drill at 11:00 am on Monday. We start semester tests on the 10th. January 12 will be the semester test make up day. Grades will be due on January 15.

All students have open lunch during semester tests. Students testing should remain in the rooms the entire time. Please do not let them leave. Students who are not testing are expected to be in the commons, library, or off school grounds. Please remind your students of this.

Building extra hour meetings are on January 10 & 24; district in-service is on January 17.

Be Extraordinary,
Mark

Success Center Update

As you prepare your semester test review materials, please include me with either a link to or a copy of your review.  We will work with you to help get your students ready for tests, and as always, it minimizes excuses when we know your expectations in advance.  In addition, if you are allowing any type of note sheet to be used on the semester exam, it is helpful to know what you will and will not allow.  Thank you!

Do you have a website that you created in the "old" Google Sites? Well if so, Google updated its migration timeline at the end of December. In the first three months of 2018, Google intends to launch an admin preview of features in the classic Sites that will help site owners migrate their content to the new Sites. Later in 2018, Google intends to open up these features for site owners and provide a management dashboard to G Suite admins that will enable them to effectively manage the migration process. Once announced, the depreciation schedule will include at least one year of unchanged operation followed by 3 months of read-only operation. Migration will be possible throughout, including the read-only phase. When the read-only phase ends, all unmigrated sites will be preserved as a takeout archive. The point is it's time to start using new Google Sites for your websites.

Are you a fan of the new Google Calendar design? If not, it seems that your opinion won't matter much longer. Google will be forcing you to upgrade your Google Calendar after February 28. You can read more here

Matt Miller from Ditch that Textbook posted an interesting post titled "Caption This." 5 examples (including a math example) were given that could be used as a bell ringer, an exit ticket, or maybe even a demonstration of learning. Click here to read his full post.

Thank you Mr. Bahr for sharing this American History Jeopardy created using Google Slides. You could easily make a copy of the document and then change the questions and answers to meet your classroom's needs.

I'm sure many of you remember those days when either you as a teacher or a teacher you had would cover up the overhead projector using a sheet of paper so students can't see the answer or the next thing. Have you ever wished you could do that when using a computer in which you're showing something to students? There is now a Google Chrome Extension that will allow you to do that. It's called ScreenShade. If you are interested in installing it in your Chrome browser, click this link, then click 'Add to Chrome'. It will appear on the right side of your Chrome browser with an icon button you can click when you want to turn it on. Then just click 'Show Overlay' and/or set a timer to it. Hint: if at first the overlay doesn't show just refresh the screen and turn on the overlay. You will need to refresh each screen if it was open before you installed the extension.
