April 21, 2017
Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a good break and came back ready to make that final push. Today is midterm for the 4th quarter. Beth and Amy will get these sent off. Please take the time to contact parents of the students who you have set up PASS Plans for if the student is not meeting their end of the deal. The more we communicate with parents of these students, the better off they will be in the long run.
Local Assessments will be next week in Junior English and Math classes. On Tuesday, we will have the random testing done for the Health and Social Studies during 1st and 2nd period in the Library.
Hopefully everyone had the chance to complete the TLC surveys that Rachael Harris sent out for the TLC committee. This info is important in helping the committee to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. If you didn't fill out these surveys please take the time to do so. Also, you were sent a link for a parent involvement survey. Please make sure you have completed this one also. The data from this survey is used by the DE when doing their desk audits of school districts. If we have a low participation number, they could come in a require us to do certain activities.
Have a great weekend!

Monday - April 24th will be voting day for next year's student council representatives as well as class officer representatives. Voting will take place on-line during advisory for grades 9-11. Please take time to have your students vote. Nancy Isebrand will send out the ballots to our students along with instructions. If a student does not get the email link, please have another student share the link, or have them email Nancy for the link please. Voting will be open all day, so if you have students who did not get a chance to vote during advisory, they will be able to vote during study hall instead.
Librarian's News
Congratulations to the the Book Bash members who went on to final competition at the AEA: Kajsa Hallberg, Kelli Susemihl, Brady Kuiken, Naomi Kinney, Kaylee Renken, Jasmine Garcia, and Alex Stamer-Fuentes. They, along with 3 other teams at LCHS had to complete an online, 200+ question quiz in 45 minutes over 21 books they had read during the year. The top 12 teams (of 32 teams in the AEA) then competed in Sioux City, April 20, for top honors. While our teams did not place in the top 3, they represented LCHS very well.

Digital storytelling has been coming across my desk lately so I thought I would share a few of the options I am aware of. One is Storyboard That. It is the most robust of my examples today and can be used on a laptop or ipad or android device. If you were interested in trying one project with it, the $12 for one month of use for up to 150 students might just be worth it.
My 2nd option today is ToonDoo. It can be used on a computer or ipad or android device. I would rank it 2nd out of today's choices when it comes to options and visual appearance.
Make Beliefs Comix is my last option today. It can be used on a computer or ipad ($1.99 for the ad free version) but does require the use of Adobe FlashPlayer. While this option is not as visually impressive, the ability to use it for free is.
360° videos are the next progression in student engagement. This link will take you to a short post by Tom Mullaney. His post shows you how to find them on YouTube and also gives you a few examples to explore.
Looking for free images to use for projects? Look no more. This link takes you to a Lifehack article that lists 10 sites for free images for blogs (although I am sure we can find other uses for them).
This is just a fun idea shared by Tony Vincent. He has provided templates and a "how to" to be able to print custom sticky notes.
My last item today is just something to read and think about. It is from the Washington Post and is titled How the SAT and PSAT Collect Personal Data On Students--And What The College Board Does With It.
Success Center Update
We are quickly approaching that time when there are many end-of-year projects and writing assignments. We would very much appreciate having copies of your rubrics, deadlines, and assignment guidelines. Knowing your expectations up front helps us to sift through the wide range of student perceptions to get to the actual assignment. Thank you!
