November 4, 2016

Happy Friday! We are now a few days in November. This is the time of year that seems to really move, 2 1/2 weeks to Thanksgiving and then another 4 weeks until Christmas break.

We have our extra hour meeting on Wednesday. You will continue working on your curriculum that goes along with the district pd days.

With the next two months being a little hectic with vacations this causes our PD days to be in a different pattern, please note that our 2nd early morning meeting in November is on November 30th. Our December days will be the week before and after the district PD days.

I have had a few more PASS plans turned into me. Remember if a student is at-risk these need to be done. Midterm for 2nd quarter is November 30th. All PASS Plans should be completed by this date at the latest.

The guidance office is getting ready for registration for next year. They will be speaking to grades 8-11 in the next couple of weeks. We have added few new classes for next year, Mr. Starr will be teaching Contemporary Literature and Mr. Zeka will be teaching a class titles Citizens and the Constitution. Other new opportunities for next year is the electromechanical certificate classes. This class will meet at the WITCC in Le Mars. There students will take classes in electronic circuits and hydraulics. Students who complete these classes will earn a certificate from WITCC and then would only need one more semester to earn their diploma. Students with a degree in this area can work careers in wind energy, robotics, or industrial maintenance. Mr. Iwrin is overhauling the EBCE program and making that a semester class that students will learn soft skills in the classroom before taking internship and/or apprenticeship.

Students will register in December and hopefully we can get them wrapped in January and will be able to have our meetings to determine sections.

Have a great weekend,
Mark

Students as Leaders

Good Luck to Josh Delutri and Tyson Weiler who qualified for the DMACC Auto Skills Competition on December 16.

Congratulations to the Student Council and advisers Neal Utesch and Nancy Isebrand for earning the Honor Council designation for the second year in a row. The student council also was awarded the Kelly Neiber Service Project award for their work with Support Siouxland Soldiers.

Great job to Madison Parker, Jeff Ahlers, Sydney Rand, Cole Berkenpas, and Walker Raymond for their presentation at the Iowa Association of Student Council's Conference.  These seniors presented on our Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign to encourage others across the state to get involved.

Assistant Principal's News

On Monday, October 31st, the Le Mars Community High School student council attended the Iowa State Student Council Conference in Des Moines, IA.  While they were there, they were awarded the Kelly Neiber Iowa Association of Student Councils Service Award for their hard work, dedication, and donations to the Support Siouxland Soldiers organization.

In addition to this award, the council also received Honor Council distinction for the second year in a row.  This year the LCHS council earned 92/100 points for their work that they had completed last year as an organization.  Points are earned by becoming involved at the school, community, and state level.  Next year our goal is to become an Honor Council with Meritorious Distinction, which requires at least 95 points to be earned.  Thank you to the staff for your dedication to our organization and continued effort to support the LCHS Student Council's work.

On Friday, November 11th, the student council, with the help of Mr. Ohrlund & Mr. Ewing, will have a short presentation to honor Veteran's Day.  This recognition will take place at 11:00 am that day.  We will begin with the singing of our National Anthem, have a short reading about the history of Verteran's Day, and will end with the playing of TAPS.

Student council will be packing our SSS care packages at 2:45 pm in the library on November 11th with the middle school.  If you need your students in class let us know, that is ok, only send them if you can spare them and they should be checking with you to make sure it is fine. Unfortunately, this is the only time that worked to involved our middle school partners.

Librarian's Update

As the sophomores begin their research paper English class, I think back to a comment I heard recently at a conference I attended: "Why can't they just cut and paste the URL into the Cite Me source and just use that? What's the big deal?" The big deal is that we want students to be digitally literate, which includes being able to locate, understand, and, most importantly, evaluate and integrate information on the Internet. If students copy and paste only, they are not looking for the author, the publisher, dates or sources. Not looking for that information limits to their evaluation of the credibility of the source. Noodletools is an easy tool to help them know where to start to look for that information so they can assess whether the site is credible. This becomes true of not only information available on the World Wide Web, but also on social networking. Users of digital media need to verify their information is accurate before using or sharing it.

Instructional Coaches Tid Bits

Are you a fan of Kahoot? Well check this out. From the people that brought you Kahoot comes Jumble (to be released soon). While the simplicity of the gameplay continues in the spirit of Kahoot Jumble requires more concentration and focus from the players. Jumble challenges players to place answers in the correct order rather than selecting one correct answer. Click here to learn more.

Do you enjoy some white noise in the background while you work? Maybe your students do too. Check out this post where you will find 8 ambient websites that just might do the trick.

Success Center Update

It's been a busy week.  So much science!  9th graders are learning the elements, and 10th graders have been relearning molecular biology and studying the zombie apocalypse from a scientific point of view.  I know that the financial literacy unit will be coming up in the government classes, and we will have more elements to learn over the next couple of weeks.  If there is something coming up in your classes that may require a little extra time and attention to the skills for students to be successful, please let us know.  Special thanks to the English teachers for giving the STAR assessment at the end of Quarter One.  If you need help getting in to look at the data, please send me a quick note. I will be happy to help.
