January 8, 2016

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week and was able to get back into the groove of things quickly. Next week we have semester tests. Test will take place Wednesday and Thursday, with Friday as a make-up day. Wednesday we will run periods 1, 2, 5, and 6. Thursday we will run periods 3, 4, 7, and 8. Please check the student handbook for times. Grades will be due on Monday, January 18 at 8:30 am.

Mr. Borchers and Mrs. Addison are finishing up the registration process. Once they have most of the students done I'll start scheduling department meetings to go over numbers and sections for next year.

The annual Board Retreat is coming up on January 25. We will be presenting to the board info on the TLC program and how our technology grant recipients are using their new technology in the classroom. The student council and robotics club will also be presenting on what they have been doing this school year. Thank you for those that have agreed to be presenters.

We have finished the weight room flooring project, if you haven't been in the weight room lately, check it out.

Have a good weekend.
Mark

Welcome back!  Hope you all had a wonderful holiday break.  If a students who owes time does any work with you in the next couple of weeks, please let me know so that I can mark it down and get it recorded.

Thanks to all who helped with Christmas Coins and the donation for the local Christian Needs Center.  As a school we collected the following to donates:

Children's Theater -    $523.00
Christmas Coins    - $2,216.00
Christmas Cookies -   $600.00
                                 $3,339.00

The student council will present a check for $3,339.00 to the Christian Needs Center this coming week from LCHS.  Thanks again for your support and donations toward a very important cause.

As we all know bullying can become a serious problem in schools and as a result this issue has become an important topic for educators.  Here are a few ways to help create a safe and positive environment for all students:

1. Talk through the forms of bullying with your students - let students know how bullying behaviors can affect others, instill empathy and let them know that it will not be tolerated here.
2. Be visible throughout the school day - make sure students see you anywhere bullying might occur like bathrooms, hallways, near the buses, and the lunchroom.  Never leave your class unattended.
3. Teach students how to be effective bystanders - encourage students to stand up against bullying behavior or to report it to you or another adult, make it ok to report problems.
4. Be an advocate for anti-bullying in your school - talk with other staff members about developing a culture that doesn't blame the victim and promotes that the bully own their bullying behavior, don't allow them to get away with it in your classrooms.
5. Respond quickly and consistently to every bullying incident - when you see it, STOP it right away.  Do not normalize bullying with statements like, "kids will be kids" - if you minimize bullying, you are sending a message that bullying is "OK".  Take action when you see it.

This month I am going to focus on social media. Social media seems to be the number one way our students keep informed. How can we use that to our advantage as teachers? Many of LCHS staff already have a Twitter account, but what else is there? Here is a list of some of the most popular tools used and the best rated for both students and teachers: https://www.graphite.org/top-picks/social-networks-for-students-and-teachers
