Happy Friday! I hope everyone had an enjoyable homecoming week. With being gone for two days to attend a class on Accessing Academic Rigor, it really went by fast for me. Remember, if you are not doing anything tonight and get bored Mr. Utesch and I always enjoy more company at the dance. It starts after the game and goes until midnight. Put on your dancing shoes and come on out!

I would also encourage you to attend the Menu Masters event on Saturday night. This is the main fundraiser for LEEP. LEEP will then turn around and help fund teacher requests that the district might not be able to fund. It is a very fun evening and all the money goes back to help our students in the district.

I will be at a meeting Tuesday, September 22 in Des Moines so if you need a substitute that morning you will need to call Mr. Utesch.

There have been some questions on what weeks you need to meet in your PLC groups. You will need to meet each week that we do not have a building in-service.

If you have any announcements you would like to share with the staff, please let me know and I will add it to Staff News.

Assistant Principal’s Corner
Thank you for a very successful homecoming week.  Hope that everyone survived.  With the new homework policy in play there have been some staff questions on how to handle kids that are not showing up after school for their detentions.  My answer to this is to try a few times to catch them, double the consequences, call the office and we can walk them there from 8th period at the end of the day, or refer them to me and I will set up a date for them to meet with you to complete the work.  My goal is that they work with you in the classroom and get the help that they need.  Last resort is me taking the detention, as this gives a shift in power and tells the student that they do not have to be accountable to you, the teacher.  Keep me informed and I will do what I need to do to support your efforts in getting kids to follow through.

Our student council is already working on their next big event.  Details are listed below and as we get closer to our packing date for Support Siouxland Soldiers, we will be looking for your support and help in promoting this very worthy cause in the classroom.  The information below was on a handout in the parade today to our public to advertise our goals for SSS this year.  We are also contacting the Sergeant Bluff-Luton student council to work with them in our efforts to provide for our local soldiers here in Siouxland.

LCHS Student Council is heading a food drive for Support Siouxland Soldiers at the October 9, 2015 football game with Sergeant Bluff. Support Siouxland Soldiers (SSS) is a non-profit organization that provides care-packages for deployed troops and food for veterans. The Siouxland community has over 18,000 Veterans. The Food for Veterans program, through SSS, provides a week’s worth of free groceries to Veterans and military families on a monthly basis if needed. Care Packs are sent to deployed troops. LCHS Student Council is collecting food items to pack boxes to send overseas and to restock SSS food supplies, especially before Veteran’s Day. Help us honor and support the veterans who have supported our country’s freedom by dropping off any of the following items at the LCHS office or bring to the football game October 9, 2015, and look for the SSS sign! Thank you for supporting our soldiers.
We are also hoping to honor all veterans and current soldiers at this game. If you have served or are currently serving our country, please go to the track in front of the grandstand during pregame to be recognized.

Some of the items that we are collecting again this year are:
·         Jerky/SlimJims/Beef Sticks (especially the smaller bags)
·         Power Bars/Protein Bars
·         Tuna or Salmon pouches
·         Beeferoni/spaghettios small cans with a pull top lid or microwavable bowls

Instructional Coaches
Have you seen edcite yet? Edcite helps teachers create Common Core aligned, interactive assessments, assign them to students and automatically grade and track student submissions. They offer 45 interactive item types and multimedia that teachers can choose from when creating an assessment. Teachers can can create their own questions or choose to access a library of teacher-created assignments that are tagged by standard. This is a web-based product that could help our students become more familiar with Smarter Balanced style of questions. While the distribution of questions is not equal, there are currently questions listed in the following subjects: math, ELA, science, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, environmental science, spanish, french, social studies, history, government, arts, and sports. If you can find the time, give edcite a look!   http://www.edcite.com/

Librarian’s Corner   MackinVia is an online ebook service provided by the AEA. There are over 900 ebooks available K-12 and 100 audiobooks for students or teachers to utilize. Students must have a log in created to use their “back packs.” Most seniors should have these as Mr. Starr used this resource last year. Teachers user names should be their first initial last name with Bulldogs as the password. Check it out. If you want me to create backpacks for your classes, let me know, and I will even come in and teach the class how to use MackinVia.
