November 20, 2015

Happy Friday! Next week is a short one so I am going to update for the next couple of weeks. Reminder our next building in-service is on November 24 at 7:00 am. You will meet in your department PLC groups. Please use the last protocol where you discussed your reading comprehension strategy with your department and mixed group PLCs. Tuesday is an early out day, so we will get out 1 hour early.

Don't forget December 4 is the midterm date of 2nd quarter. Grades should be updated that morning by 8:30 so we can run midterms and get them sent out that day. All PASS Plans should be completed by this date also. If you have a student who you think may be at-risk please get this scheduled. I have had the question a couple of times about the parent not responding to the letter. If a parent hasn't called you, please give them a followup phone call to your letter to ensure the parent actually got the letter.

The counselors will be going to classes to give their registration talk. We will be registering students December 16 and 17 in the library. Once we get students registered, I will start to set up department meetings to go over numbers and course assignments.

Winter season will be in full swing, so if you haven't reminded students about your expectations for getting assignments, completing missed quizzes, tests, etc. this would be a great time to do that.

As always, have a great weekend.

Students as Leaders

Good Luck to Sarah Benton, Kyle Dunn, Kajsa Hallberg, and Dominic Loutsch at the All-State Music Festival Thursday through Saturday in Ames.

Great Job to Erin Ohrlund and all the cast/crew in Cooking Can Be Murder!

Caitlyn Niehus, Madi Martin, and Cole Ernst presented to the city's Community Betterment Project team about the banner project they designed for around the Olson Cultural Event Center. The project was part of their participation in Youth on Main Street. The committee voted to fund the project as part of a revamped Olson Cultural Event Center.

Staff as Leaders

Congrats to Tracy Wingert for being named November Employee of the Month.

Dave Irwin, Judd Kopperud, Todd Lancaster, Steve Wick, and Bruce Tabbert spoke to a small group of LCHS students regarding sportsmanship and behavior at events. Thank you to Larry Johnson for organizing it.

How can school staff reinforce bullying prevention for students?

1. Don't stop talking about bullying and what it looks like - the effects it can have on others, how to deal with negative behaviors, and how to influence negative situations.
2. Call out rude behaviors - blatant contempt isn't always bullying, but it is never ok.
3. Don't just fix the situation, provide students a chance to cope - talk with friends about taking the power away from the bully and ignoring the behaviors with statements like, "We don't do that here".
4. Don't cling too much to the child's "role" - example, "He is a good kid, so he wouldn't do that".  Grouping kids into roles so that it is easier to ignore the bad behavior is like giving the bully permission to do as they please.
5. Let's demonstrate - not disregard the students - educate them on how to interact and demonstrate it with your daily interactions in the classroom, hallways, and outside the building.

Student council will be announcing our Christmas Coins campaign for 2015 soon.  Please listen for announcements and help to reinforce the idea of giving during this holiday season.  Our goal this year is to have each student bring $2.00 for our donation.

Our Sno-Ball dance is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 19th following the Heelan game.  We are looking for at least 2 staff members to volunteer to help out with supervision.  It is a great opportunity to spend some time with your students outside the classroom setting and is very much appreciated by the student council.  Please let me know if you can help.  The dance will be in Carey gym from 9-12.

Have a great Thanksgiving break!

Doodle 4 Google is back! The winning student wins a $30,000 college scholarship and their school wins a $50,000 Google for Education Tech Grant.

C.G.P. Grey is a YouTube channel that discusses politics, history, geography and more to give every student a rundown of some of the things we all really ought to know.

Did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month?

Have you ever played Smarty Pins on Google Maps? Google asks you a random trivia question about a specific city or country and you're tasked with dropping a pin on the right spot.

How cool would it be if our students created a greenscreen video using the Touchcast app and won the high school or your classroom a Studio in a Box? Touchcast is an app that not only allows greenscreen but you have hyperlinks in the video itself. If you choose to watch the 2 minute video above, each white or blue dot on the timeline is a portion of the video that has an object that acts as a hyperlink.

As always, if you have any
  • technology related PD class that you would like to see offered
  • technology related project you would like to try in your classroom
  • technology related activity that you would like assistance with,
let me know and I will do whatever I can to help!
