October 16, 2015
Happy Friday! Congratulations to the BIG RED BAND and Curt Ohrlund, Randy Ewing, Randy Benton, and Mary Benton on the Division 1 ratings at State Marching Band Competition this past Saturday. They have had an outstanding season. If you haven't seen them yet, you can catch them at halftime of the football game on October 23 or the Parade of Bands concert on October 30.
The student council will be attending the State Student Council Leadership Conference again this year on October 26. At the conference, they will be recognized as a honor council for the work they did last year. This is a first for our student council so please make sure to congratulate the student council members and their advisers Nancy Isebrand and Neal Utesch. It is no small feat to earn this distinction! We will also have students presenting this year at the conference, which is another first.
We have had a few PASS Plan meetings taking place since midterm. This is a good time to meet with the parents before the student gets to far behind. The more we communicate with the families the better chance we have of reaching the student and assisting them in making better choices. Once you have a meeting, it wouldn't hurt to call home, especially if the student is making positive progress. That call home will go a long way in gaining further parental support. Most parents want to do what is best for their children, some may not know what to do when it comes to schooling. Don't assume parents always know what you are talking about, give them specific jobs to work on to help their child.
Have a great weekend!

Remember to continue collecting food items for our Support Siouxland Soldiers campaign and to encourage our students to bring in items as well as cash donations to help our cause. Our kick off at last Friday's game was a great success as we collected a van full of food as well as $200+ in cash donations. Student council kids will be at Fareway and Hy-Vee this weekend collecting donations from our community in our continued effort to support local soldiers in Le Mars and surrounding communities.
Bullying information concerning Students and Bully Bystanders:
http://micheleborba.com/blog/mobilizing-bystanders-to-stand-up-to-bullies/
This article/web site addresses results from a study conducted by Dr. Michele Borba around teaching kids to be active bystanders to bullying. The focus of the information presented on this site is to teach kids to not be bully bystanders but to be "Upstanders"! Teaching kids to take a stand can put an end to the bullying behaviors which take place within our school. Demonstrating our willingness to correct negative behaviors in the hallways, lunch room, classroom, playing field, locker room, art room, band room, and school bus is a good place to start as our students will see the expectation and also address the issues when they are confronted with them. According to the article, active student bystanders can:
1. Reduce the audience that a bully craves.
2. Mobilize the compassion of witnesses to step in and stop the bullying.
3. Support the victim and reduce the drama.
4. Be a positive influence in curbing a bullying episode.
5. Encourage other students to support a school climate of caring.
6. Report bulling incident since 85 percent of time bullying occurs an adult is not present. Students are usually the witnesses.
I encourage you all to visit the web link and to review the section titled, "Borba's Six 'Be a Bully B.U.S.T.E.R.' Skills". These are valuable tips to review with your advisory classes and to remember as you are dealing with difficult situations within the school. Demonstrate that you are willing to step in and stop the behaviors and students will soon catch on.
