Friday Focus
I hope everyone has had a great week! I am out of the building after 11:00 am attending the state dance competition in Des Moines. I will be out of the building on Monday also. Attending a workshop at Mount Vernon High School. If you put in for a sub late on Monday morning, please let Mr. Moss know via text (541-2785).
We only have 7 instructional days and 3 semester test days left in this semester. As we quickly approach the end of the semester there are a few items I want to remind you about to ensure they are completed.
1. Grades are due before you leave on December 19. You will need to verify your Semester 1 grades. Please double check a few calculations to make sure PowerSchool is doing this correctly. Steps to verify your grades: 1. Log into PowerTeacher Pro, 2. Go to 'A+ Grading' and Click 'Traditional', 3. Click 'Final Grade Status' in the bottom right-hand corner, 4. Check the box for 'S1 Final Grades are Complete' and then click 'Save'.
2. Make sure that you have turned in the PASS Plan summary form for any student that failed a class to the office and have mailed a copy home. Please notify the guidance office so they can make a note about summer school. This form needs to be filled out for each student individually. The form can be found here: PASS Plan Summary Form
3. For any student that was given an incomplete, please complete the form and turn into the office and send home to the parents. This form can be found here: Incomplete Form
4. If a student can do credit recovery, please let the guidance office and myself know. A packet should be put together and given to the success center so the student can complete the work necessary to pass the class.
5. If you have a semester class, please make sure you collect any school/your property before they finish your class. If you have a year long class, please check with the students as some could be changing to different teachers. If they have your items, you will want to collect those.
6. During semester tests, students are expected to be in class the entire time. The only class the students do not have to report to is study hall or resource rooms. Students in PE and Intro to Careers will need to report to class. Students that do not leave during study hall or opens, will need to be in the Commons. They will not be allowed to walk around in the hallways. Students are done testing at 2:36 on Wednesday and Thursday. Buses will run on the normal 3:30 dismissal time. Remind students they can not go to the middle school when they are done at 2:36.
7. Students will need to take the test during their assigned period unless it has been cleared through Mr. Moss or myself. Students with advance make ups can arrange a time to take their test and that does not have to go through administration.
8. On semester test make up day, students can move from class to class as needed to take tests
9. If for some reason we would have a snow day on the semester test day, then we will forgo the make up day. If we have multiple snow days where we don't get the test complete, we will take those when we get back on January 5. Hopefully this doesn't happen.

Assistant Principal's Happenings
Things I'm Thinking About:
Social media can be an absolute morale killer. Have you ever "doom-scrolled" through endless shorts about teaching that are supposed to be funny but leave you depressed? Recently I've deleted all social media from my phone, for a time. It's been good for me, and I would encourage anyone to take a social media "fast" from time to time.
But I ran across this post that I'd like to share. It is actually a comment made to an educator that had expressed how they were thinking about throwing in the towel. I thought it holds a lot of practical advice that I needed to hear. I hope it helps you, as well. Let's finish this semester with strength and optimism.
Dear Educator/Teacher/Principal -- The work can be daunting, demoralizing, and draining. I’m 50. I retired with 21 years in administration and 25 total in education. I worked part time for 2 years after retirement and I’m back serving as a school principal again because I want to, not because I have to. With that being said - there are many highs and lows to this calling. Over the years the work broke me and restored me time and time again.
Here’s what I can share with you:
1. Choose to replace every negative thought with either a positive one or a thought rooted in grace. Meaning you put yourself in the shoes of the person you’re feeling negative about. This takes a lot of discipline and over time it becomes a way of life.
2. Treat people like they are good
3. Assume people have good intentions
4. Focus on what you can control
5. Be mindful that your disposition can impact the entire school. Choose joy and choose to see the good
6. There’s power in humility
7. It’s none of your business what other people think about you. If you wouldn’t ask someone for advice, don’t take their opinion to heart.
8. Let fighting the good fight on behalf of kids energize you.
9. Take a genuine interest in everyone you encounter. Be the steady, unflappable leader they need.
10. Notice the good and call it out early and often through kind words and specific feedback highlighting the exceptional qualities you see.
11. Sit in classrooms even if you are doing bureaucratic work. Breathe in the progress of the fountains of youth. Write positive notes to the teacher.
12. Remember that your brain believes what you tell it.
13. Give yourself credit for choosing a path of service. See yourself as the chief servant. Look for opportunities to be of service.
14. Start by affording yourself extra grace. Maybe you have no more feel good endorphins. Consider taking supplements and/or seeing your family doctor. If there’s a physiological reason - all the positive self talk in the world will not help. Make sure you rule out any mental or physical health issues.
15. Recognize you’re human and tomorrow is a new day. I often fall short and contemplate jumping out of the wheel, but if not us, then who will do the work? The kids are counting on us
Thankful for you!
Moss
