Happy Friday! We made it through first semester! Just a reminder that grades are due Monday at 8:30. If a student failed your class, please turn in your final summary of the PASS Plan to me at that time also. I will store grades at that time and Beth and Amy will run report cards.
As we start second semester, students have 5 days to add a class and 10 days to drop. So the last day to add is January 20 with the last day to drop as January 27. After the 20th, the only students that will be allowed to drop are those taking 7 classes.
Monday during Advisory, please remember to do the technology survey with your students. Just read the question to the students and have them raise their hand. Do not have them take it individually. When you are done, please send it to the office with at student. Make sure your name is on top so we can track the classes. Also during advisory, have the students fill out the 1st semester reflections and the 2nd semester goals.
I have a Lakes Conference Principal's meeting next Friday, so if you are curious about how the other conference schools do something, please let me know and I'll try to find out.
I would like to thank you for your work with our students this first semester. I know at times it hasn't been easy and your patience has been tested. Remember the difference you make in these young adults lives each day. Regardless of what type of day they are having, we have a chance to be a positive role model for them. For some, we could be one of the few positive role models that they have.
Have a great weekend!
Congrats to the Robotics team, Jeff Ahlers, Colton Webner, Chloe Evans, Summer LaPato, Luke Sudtelgte, Justin Tyler, Robbie Hodson, and Kyle Herbst on their third place finish for the Inspire Award, their first place award for the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award and being half of the winning alliance team. They are coached by Doug Martin, Tracy Wingert, and Lori Carter.
Good luck to the students who will be attending the NW Iowa Honor Choir Concert on Monday. They are: Gretchen Adams, Aly Buhman, Max Hardyk, Willow Olsen, Keegan Pippett, Mariah Schilmoeller, Zach Spieler, and Noah Watson.
Good luck to the students who will be attending the Iowa Lakes Jazz Festival on Tuesday. They are: Jeff Ahlers, Ote Albrecht, Cameron Albus, Sarah Benton, Cole Berkenpas, Madi Brown, Chloe Evans, Tessa Hansen, Katelyn Hartman, Kristen Heimgartner, Kody Koerselman, Anthony Lamoreux, Diana Loutsch, Mary Meis, Drake Oswald, Landen Parmelee, Mariah Schilmoeller, Zach Spieler, Anna Cacura, Sam Vacura, and Caden Washburn.
The LCHS Student council is currently selling HOPE t-shirts for our cancer drive. We would like to have everyone wear these shirts to our game on January 31st as we raise money to bring HOPE to LCS families that are dealing with cancer.
The makerspace is a place where students have the opportunity to explore, make mistakes, learn, and accomplish something that they are interested in. They will make mistakes; I am not going to be teaching them, just monitoring them. They do have to have a plan on what they want to do Consider learning hyperdoc and they must show what they have done: Show what you have done This is a learning experience for me as well. I will be tweaking the program as the year goes on.
In the meantime, if you have any Legos, Knex, crafty items, old electronics (no tube tvs please) that you want to donate, please drop them off in the library!
DriveSlides is an extension for Google Chrome developed by Matt Miller and Alice Keeler. The extension will take folder that you have predetermined full of photos and turn them into a new Google Slides presentation. It does all the photo uploading, adding and sizing for you. This is a serious time saver.
Save to Google Drive is another Google Chrome extension that comes in handy. It helps you save web content and web screenshots directly to your Google Drive.
Google Classroom recently added the ability to differentiate. When you create an assignment, announcement, or question you now have the ability to select which students you want to see the post. What could be done with it? You could assign group activities, provide extra practice to select students, level activities, provide interest based activities, or create rotating activities for a class.
This is a clever way to use Google Slides to make a "random name generator." The video is about 7.5 minutes long. Basically what is happening is a Google Slides presentation is created. Each student's name is put on a separate slide. Then the slide show is shown where the show runs automatically and the slides are set to show up for a very short amount of time. You randomly select pause and whoever's name shows up on the slide is who is chosen.
I haven't tested this one yet so I don't know for sure that it works but the possibility exists to make conference calls from within your Google Doc using the UberConference Add-on.
One request I receive is a way to translate text into Spanish. While I realize that they are not perfect, something is better than nothing. One I have used recently is "The Online Doc Translator." One thing I like about it is that it does a pretty good job of retaining the formatting. It also works with Word, Powerpoint Excel, and PDF's.
One last tidbit. If there is a PD class involving technology that you are wanting, shoot me a line. We will see if we can make it happen!
Take a few minutes to use the data from this screening to help identify any of your students who are on the bubble. As we move toward the Iowa Assessment, remember that STAR has great resources to help you prepare students. It might just be your little extra TLC that puts them over the top. Please let me know if I can help you log back into your account. Have a great week!
